Who’s starting, who’s hurt, and who’s on the move?

NFL news is nonstop, and we’re breaking it all down week by week this season.

Here’s the latest on what’s happening around the league entering Week 14:

The Philadelphia Eagles star defensive tackle will miss their road matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers due to having surgery on both of his shoulders, per ESPN. Carter is considered week-to-week moving forward. A 2024 Pro Bowler, Carter has recorded two sacks, 32 combined tackles and six passes defended this season. Philadelphia has lost its last two games and is now 8-4.

Mark Andrews, Ravens agree to extension

Andrews has spent the first eight years of his career in Baltimore, and now he’s set to be there for the next three. The Ravens and the three-time Pro Bowl tight end agreed to a three-year extension, worth $39.3 million. In his prime, Andrews was the focal point of Baltimore’s offense, totaling a single-season career-high 1,361 yards in 2021. This season, he became the franchise’s all-time leader in receiving yards. However, he’s not as imposing of a target, but he’s still invaluable to their success as a timely pass-catcher, run-blocker and leader in their locker room, and he’ll remain in Baltimore for the long haul.

Herbert didn’t take part in practice for the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 3 due to recent surgery on a broken bone in his left hand, per head coach Jim Harbaugh. The quarterback suffered the injury in the team’s Week 13 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. Trey Lance entered the game for Herbert.

Los Angeles hosts the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. Herbert has totaled 2,842 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 94.9 passer rating this season, while totaling 66.9% of his passes.

Vikings simplifying things for J.J. McCarthy

When McCarthy next lines up under center for the Vikings, the second-year quarterback will operate under a more simplified offense to try and improve his decision-making.

“It’s purely about decision making at this point,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters on Wednesday. “I want him to have a clear head and a clear mind to just go play, but play with an understanding of the decisions that I make … have to be of the utmost importance, because we learned our turnover number is where it is. It’s not a winning formula.

“I don’t want him overthinking or worrying about if the fundamentals need to be changed. Let’s just make the throws. Let’s just throw and catch. Let’s just play with great rhythm and understanding of the plan.”

McCarthy has struggled in his first full season as the Vikings’ starting quarterback. He’s thrown for 929 yards, six touchdowns and 10 interceptions, playing in just six games due to injury. After missing the Week 13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, though, McCarthy is expected to play against the Washington Commanders on Sunday as he was a full participant at Wednesday’s practice.

Lions list Amon-Ra St. Brown as questionable before Thursday’s game

The Detroit Lions‘ pre-game injury report for Thursday’s game against the Cowboys included four players listed as out – safety Kerby Joseph, wide receiver Kalif Raymond, and tight ends Brock Wright and Shane Zylstra – as well as wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown as questionable.

St. Brown has not practiced this week owing to a sprained ankle, and is a game-time decision to play. He suffered the injury during the Lions’ Thanksgiving game against the Packers last week, in the first quarter.

He told reporters on Tuesday that, “It hurts, but it’s getting better. So, that’s the good news. Just day by day. Just trying to make sure I’m out there for my guys,” per ESPN.

Chiefs’ Josh Simmons undergoes wrist surgery, placed on IR

The Kansas City Chiefs placed first-round pick Josh Simmons on injured reserve Wednesday following surgery to repair a fractured and dislocated left wrist, leaving them without their starting left tackle as they try to claw back into the postseason picture.

The Chiefs are 6-6 and 10th in the AFC race heading into Sunday night’s game against the Houston Texans.

Simmons started the first five games of the season, then missed the next four while dealing with a family matter. He returned to start in a loss to Denver and a win over Indianapolis before getting hurt in last week’s Thanksgiving Day loss in Dallas.

“Listen, the kid loves to play football. He’s down about that part,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “But he’s upbeat. The surgery went well, which is a real positive, so he feels good about that. And then it’s just a matter of coming back.”

“He did a great job with his knee coming back,” Reid said of his patellar injury last year with Ohio State. “Whatever he can do to rehab it, he’s going to do. That’s how he rolls.”

Esa Pole has moved up from the practice squad to replace Simmons on the active roster.

Smith, Taylor miss Chiefs practice, unlikely for Sunday

Along with losing Josh Simmons, the Chiefs are missing right guard Trey Smith with an ankle injury and right tackle Jawaan Taylor because of a triceps strain. Both missed practice on Wednesday, and it appears likely that they will enter their game against Houston with three replacements along the offensive line.

Wanya Morris is expected to replace Simmons on the blind side of Patrick Mahomes, while Mike Caliendo will slide into the lineup for Smith at guard. Jaylon Moore, who played well in place of Simmons earlier this season, will fill in for Taylor at right tackle.

“For us, whoever is going to be in the game is going to be ready to go,” Chiefs center Creed Humphrey said. “It’s just making sure that communication is good, everyone is on the same page and everyone is ready to play.”

Mahomes did acknowledge that the ball may have to come out of his hands a bit quicker, but not just because of the fill-ins. They also will be going against one of the NFL’s best defenses, one that ranks first in total yardage and scoring.

The Cleveland Browns designated Watson to return to practice from the physically unable to perform list (PUP) on Dec. 3, beginning his 21-day window to return to being on the active roster. Watson hasn’t played this season due to a torn Achilles, which he suffered in October 2024 and aggravated in the offseason. The 30-year-old Watson has one season remaining on a five-year, $230 million deal with the Browns.

Watson has started just 19 games for the Browns since being acquired from the Houston Texans in 2022 due to an 11-game suspension in 2022, a season-ending shoulder injury in 2023 and a torn Achilles in 2024. At present, rookie Shedeur Sanders is under center for Cleveland.

Bills list Joey Bosa as week-to-week

Bills coach Sean McDermott on Wednesday listed edge rusher Joey Bosa as being week to week because of a hamstring issue that will further impact Buffalo’s already injury-depleted defense.

McDermott did not provide a definitive timeline of how many weeks Bosa will miss except to say “we’re hoping it’s on the shorter end of it.”

The 10th-year player was hurt in the second half of Buffalo’s 26-7 win at Pittsburgh on Sunday. It was a game in which Bosa helped turned the tide with a strip-sack of Aaron Rodgers, with Christian Benford returning the fumble 17 yards for a touchdown on the opening snap of the third quarter.

Bosa’s injury leaves Buffalo (8-4) further short-handed in preparing to host the Cincinnati Bengals (4-8) on Sunday.

The Bills’ defensive front is already missing starting tackle Ed Oliver (bicep) and edge rushers Michael Hoecht (Achilles tendon) and Landon Jackson (knee). Meantime, starting linebacker Terrel Bernard’s status remains uncertain because of an elbow injury, while safeties Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin are on IR.

Colts bring on kicker Blake Grupe

Indianapolis signed kicker Blake Grupe to its practice squad Wednesday, one day after waiving Michael Badgley, and he’s expected to make his Colts debut in Sunday’s key AFC South game at Jacksonville.

Grupe was part of a three-player tryout Tuesday that also featured former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker.

“I have nothing but good things to say about New Orleans, especially the city,” Grupe said of the team that released him two weeks ago. “Unfortunately, I feel like this year kind of snowballed on me a little bit, and that’s the nature of this business, that’s the nature of being a kicker. I know how to be better.”

The move also could benefit Grupe in another way, leaving a 2-10 Saints squad while joining the 8-4 Colts, who are tied with the Jaguars for the division lead and hold the AFC’s No. 6 seed entering Week 14.

Grupe lost his job in New Orleans after making just 18 of 26 field goals this season though he did convert all 15 of his extra-point attempts, which was a key factor in Indy’s decision to go with its third kicker this season.

He made 75 of 94 field goals and 86 of 88 extra points in 45 games with the Saints between 2023 and 2025 and also worked with Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason when the two were at Notre Dame in 2022.

Steelers waive CB Slay, add ex-Vikings WR Thielen

The Pittsburgh Steelers mutually agreed to part ways with cornerback Darius Slay, his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey told ESPN on Tuesday. Slay, 34, is expected to continue playing and begin exploring his options with other teams.

A free-agent acquisition last offseason, Slay started nine of his 10 games played with the Steelers, recording 36 tackles (28 solo), three pass deflections and one fumble recovery. The 13-year veteran was a healthy scratch for the Week 13 loss to the Bills, and previously missed Week 11 after suffering a concussion in Week 10 before returning in Week 12.

The Steelers continued to make moves on Tuesday, claiming former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen off waivers.

Pittsburgh claimed Thielen hours after the 13-year veteran mutually parted ways with Minnesota to give him an opportunity for more playing time elsewhere down the stretch of his expected final NFL season.

Thielen had just eight catches for 69 yards for the Vikings (4-8) and was a healthy scratch for their game at Seattle on Sunday, a 26-0 loss that was their first shutout in 18 years. With the Vikings struggling badly on offense, Thielen was rarely used behind the top three wide receivers Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Jalen Nailor.

Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said Thielen’s agent asked last week for his release so he could find a more significant role with another club. Thielen plans to retire after this season.

“Following discussions through the weekend and out of respect for Adam, we have agreed to give him the opportunity to pursue more playing time elsewhere. Adam is one of the all-time great Vikings, and we wish him and his family continued success,” Adofo-Mensah said.

Colts CB Sauce Gardner dealing with calf injury

Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen said Monday that starting cornerback Sauce Gardner is expected to miss “some time” after injuring his left calf during Sunday’s 20-16 loss to the Houston Texans but that Gardner avoided hurting his Achilles tendon.

Steichen didn’t provide details on how much time the two-time All-Pro might miss but said he believed Gardner would return this season and that he’s not expected to go on injured reserve.

Gardner was hurt on the Texans second offensive play of the game while in coverage, but he did not appear to get hit when he went down. He stayed on the field for several minutes before he was helped off the field and taken to the locker room.

The Colts envisioned pairing Gardner with two other Pro Bowl cornerbacks, Charvarius Ward and Kenny Moore II, to create one of the league’s top secondaries when they acquired him in a trade deadline deal that included sending two first-round picks to the New York Jets.

So far, though, those plans haven’t worked out. Gardner, Moore and Ward have only played one full game together.

Colts move on from K Badgley

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Tuesday kicker Michael Badgley has been waived after seven games.

Badgley, 30, signed with the Colts for a third stint on Oct. 7 after starter Spencer Shrader suffered a season-ending injury. He went on to convert 18-of-21 extra-point tries and 10 of his 11 field goal attempts, going 3-of-3 from 30-plus yards, 2-of-2 from 40-plus and 2-of-3 from 50-plus.

Browns lose Collins for rest of season

Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Maliek Collins will be lost for the rest of the season after suffering a quad injury in Sunday’s 26-8 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Coach Kevin Stefanski made the announcement Monday that Collins will have to undergo season-ending surgery.

The 10-year veteran defensive lineman sustained the non-contact injury during the third quarter. He was second on the team with 6.5 sacks along with 28 quarterback pressures. Collins is also a key reason why All-Pro pass rusher Myles Garrett needs four sacks to break the NFL’s single-season record of 22.5.

“When you lose a guy like Maliek, you don’t replace him. He’s made a big impact on this football team on the field and off. We have some older guys in there (the defensive line room), but we have a bunch of young guys in there. I think they’ve learned a lot from the professional that Maliek is and I think you have to carry that with you throughout.”

Collins’ injury with 9:36 remaining in the third quarter also set off a fracas between some of the Browns defensive linemen and San Francisco wide receiver Jauan Jennings. Garrett and Shelby Harris said some of Jennings’ comments after the play crossed the line.

Chargers QB Herbert to undergo surgery

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will have surgery Monday to repair a broken bone in his non-throwing hand.

Herbert is optimistic about his chances to play next week for the Chargers (8-4), who beat the Raiders 31-14 on Sunday for their fourth victory in five games. Herbert played the final three quarters against Las Vegas with a hard cast on his left hand while exclusively taking shotgun snaps.

“I think it’s one of those things where you just stabilize it (and play),” Herbert said. “I’m not the doctor, unfortunately, but they were hopeful, so I think that’s a good thing.’

Herbert wasn’t sure when his hand was broken, but it appeared to happen late in the Chargers’ opening drive when he was thrown to the ground by Raiders safety Jeremy Chinn after a short scramble. Herbert threw a touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston on the next snap, but trainers took him off the field a few minutes later.

“I’m treating it as if I’m playing Monday,” Herbert said of the surgery and recovery, and the Chargers’ next matchup against the Eagles. “I think they were very hopeful for that, so I think that’s just something we’ll see tomorrow and get a feel for.”

Herbert has 2,842 yards passing with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this season, his sixth for the Chargers.
