Formula 1 teams completed pre-season testing for the 2026 season after three days of action at the Bahrain International Circuit. New regulations reshape the sport entirely, yielding promising insights. After January’s Barcelona shakedown, squads gathered crucial data and evaluated equipment before the March 8 Australian Grand Prix opener, marking the return of 11 teams to the grid after a decade.
Mercedes logged the highest mileage with 407 laps, matched by Racing Bulls at 407 and Haas at 404. Aston Martin encountered reliability issues, limiting track time and exposing pace deficits that heighten pre-season concerns.
Top Performers Set the Pace
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari delivered the benchmark lap at 1:31.992. Kimi Antonelli sustained Mercedes’ momentum in second at 1:32.803. Oscar Piastri secured third for Ferrari at 1:32.861, edging McLaren’s Lando Norris (1:32.871) into fourth. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen posted the fifth-quickest time (1:33.109), followed by Mercedes’ George Russell (1:33.197) and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton (1:33.408).
New entrant Cadillac struggled, with Sergio Perez 20th (1:35.369) and Valtteri Bottas 19th (1:35.290). Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll (21st, 1:35.974) and Fernando Alonso (22nd, 1:36.536) trailed at the bottom.

Leclerc Stays Grounded After Topping Charts
Despite leading the timesheets, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc maintains caution. “The test day was very smooth; we ran through our programme and tested all the things we planned to,” Leclerc stated to media. “In terms of performance, it’s still difficult to understand where we really stand because teams are hiding their true form, so it’s important not to focus too much on lap times and prepare for the first race. We will build step by step and try to understand how to extract the maximum from our car. We have a lot of data to analyse and we will see how things go.”
2026 Season Kicks Off in Melbourne
Focus shifts to Albert Park for the Australian Grand Prix. While Bahrain offered hints—Mercedes’ volume, McLaren’s steadiness, Red Bull’s potential—the real test awaits under race conditions.
