Chelsea’s pre-match huddle around referee Paul Tierney sparked debate during their 1-0 loss to Newcastle on Saturday. Manager Liam Rosenior confirms the team will maintain the practice ahead of their Champions League last-16 second leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Controversial Huddle

The Blues gathered in the center circle as Tierney remained in position before kickoff. Reece James delivered a short team talk, with Cole Palmer appearing puzzled by the referee’s presence. The unusual scene quickly drew attention on social media.

Rosenior Stands Firm

Rosenior dismisses the backlash, insisting the huddle promotes unity and leadership without disrespecting opponents. Speaking before Tuesday’s crucial match, he states, “The huddle has been blown out of proportion, to be honest. There’s never any bad intention there; they want to show unity.”

He adds that the team will choose a suitable spot on the pitch to avoid issues, emphasizing focus on the high-stakes game: “We have a huge game tomorrow and have the chance to do something special, so I would rather focus on that.”

Post-match against Newcastle, Rosenior highlighted referee decisions, noting, “If Paul had focused more on his job… we have a penalty today. I don’t think anybody can say that [Nick] Woltemade doesn’t kick Cole Palmer down in the box.” He prioritizes on-field accuracy over the huddle ritual.

Gary Neville’s Strong Critique

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville leads the criticism, calling the huddle “extremely odd” and “really weird.” He argues it signals poor preparation: “If you’ve prepared for seven months… you need a huddle 10 seconds before kick-off, you’ve done something wrong.”

Neville views it as performative: “It’s just for show. The fans won’t be conned by that. They will judge you on your performance. It won’t intimidate a good team. It didn’t intimidate Newcastle.” He urges teams to abandon the practice.
