Early Blows Seal Fate
PSG, the defending champions, built on their 5-2 first-leg win with quick strikes in the second leg. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring after just six minutes, followed by Bradley Barcola’s stunning 25-yard finish eight minutes later. Substitute Senny Mayulu added a third in the second half, securing PSG’s progression.
Chelsea fielded the youngest team in this season’s competition, and their inexperience proved costly over the two legs.
Hargreaves Demands Experience
Former Champions League winner Owen Hargreaves criticized Chelsea’s recruitment approach, urging the addition of seasoned players to compete for major trophies.
“PSG already had a culture; this club has won things forever under different managers, regimes, and players,” Hargreaves stated post-match. “They’ve won the biggest trophies—Premier Leagues, Champions Leagues—not smaller ones.”
He added: “Chelsea should aim for the Premier League and Champions League. Right now, they’re miles off. They’ve signed brilliant young players, but too many lack experience.”
Hargreaves highlighted past Chelsea successes: “All great Chelsea teams had world-class experienced players—John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Makelele, Essien.”
“It’s great to have young kids, but you need experience,” he continued. “The owners must understand that. You can’t have three academy players in a back four against the European champions. It’s impossible; it’s never going to work. 8-2 over two legs is too much.”
Rosenior Reflects on Exit
Manager Liam Rosenior acknowledged the errors that derailed the tie. “Six minutes in, another mistake takes the wind out of our sails. The second goal was a 25-yard top-corner strike,” he said.
“Going two goals down early and five on aggregate makes for a difficult evening. We wanted more fight, but credit PSG—their possession play was top-class over two legs, and they deserve to advance.”
Rosenior pointed to recent form: “Two and a quarter games ago, we drew 2-2 away at Aston Villa but switched off in key moments. I must ensure we eliminate those errors ahead of Everton.”
