Paul McCartney, 83, arrived in high spirits at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on Friday for the opening night of his two-day performance series. This marks his first show since the Got Back Tour. Dressed in a zip-up jacket and black-tinted sunglasses, the Beatles legend kept a low profile upon arrival but paused to wave enthusiastically to crowds of fans gathered outside before heading inside to prepare.
New Album Announcement
McCartney recently announced his upcoming studio album, The Boys Of Dungeon Lane, set for release in May, along with a new single, Days We Left Behind. The single premiered on BBC Merseyside on Thursday, introducing his first original music in five years. The artwork features a new portrait photographed by his daughter, Mary McCartney, 56.
Reflections on Liverpool Roots
The album delves into McCartney’s memories of his hometown, Liverpool, including early adventures with George Harrison and John Lennon before Beatlemania. Speaking about the single, Sir Paul shared: “This is very much a memory song for me. The album title, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, comes from a lyric in this track… I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past, but then I think how can you write about anything else? It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool. It involves a bit in the middle about John and Forthlin Road which is the street I used to live in. Dungeon Lane is near there… I used to live in a place called Speke which is quite working class. We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.”
Described as his most introspective work, the album explores post-war childhood in Liverpool, the resilience of his parents, and pre-Beatles days with bandmates. This marks his 18th solo studio album.
Recording Process
Sessions for The Boys Of Dungeon Lane spanned five years, fitting between global tour dates in Los Angeles and Sussex. The project began when McCartney met producer Andrew Watt over tea to discuss ideas.
Recent Downtime
Prior to these LA performances, McCartney relaxed in St. Barts with his wife, Nancy, 66. The couple married in 2011 after meeting in 2007. Both have children from prior relationships: Nancy shares son Arlen with ex-husband Bruce Blakeman, while McCartney has daughters Stella, James, Heather, and Mary from his late wife Linda, plus daughter Beatrice, 19, with ex-wife Heather Mills, 55.
