An Australian Army reservist faces up to 20 years in prison after authorities charged him with serving in Ukraine’s armed forces without permission.
Vincent Tran, 25, underwent arrest at a residence in Flexistow, northeast Adelaide, on Thursday. Federal police officers confiscated multiple electronic devices, including a mobile phone and laptop, during the operation.
Charge and Allegations
Tran faces one count of a restricted individual engaging in work for a foreign military organization or government body. This marks the first such charge by the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
Investigators claim Tran traveled to Ukraine in May 2025 and operated drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine amid the conflict with Russia. He reportedly remained overseas for eight months before returning to Australia in January.
Defence regulations strictly control such activities for personnel like reservists, requiring prior authorization for foreign military involvement.
Investigation Details
The probe began following a referral from Defence authorities suspecting unauthorized foreign service. Forensic analysis of the seized devices uncovered images tying Tran to participation in a foreign conflict, with additional examinations ongoing.
Court Appearance and AFP Statement
Tran is scheduled to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
AFP Counter Terrorism Commander Paula Hudson stated that the AFP collaborates closely with local, Commonwealth, and international partners to safeguard Australia’s interests.
