West Brom Faces Points Deduction Over PSR Breach in Relegation Fight
SHARE

West Bromwich Albion risks a points deduction after allegations of breaching the English Football League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2024-25 season. The Baggies, positioned just two points above the Championship relegation zone with four matches remaining, could face immediate sanctions that trigger demotion from the second tier.

Alleged Financial Breach and Compliance Process

The Club Financial Reporting Unit (CFRU) has submitted a compliance report to West Brom concerning exceeded loss limits under EFL PSR regulations. Clubs must submit annual accounts by December 31, 2025, for assessment. West Brom has 14 days from receiving the report to respond, with hearings typically scheduled within 28 days. Decisions by the Club Financial Reporting Panel (CFRP) become public, though prior discussions remain confidential.

Club’s Response and Sanction Expectations

In a statement, West Brom acknowledges media reports, asserts full compliance with PSR rules, and commits to cooperating with the EFL’s Club Financial Reporting Unit to resolve the matter. The club aims to defer any points penalty until next season, given the campaign’s final stretch. However, EFL guidelines direct sanctions for the season following the breach, potentially impacting this term’s standings. Possible penalties include points deductions, transfer embargoes, or fines.

Relegation Battle Intensifies

West Brom sits one point above Portsmouth and two points clear of the drop zone, which currently features Oxford United, Leicester City, and relegated Sheffield Wednesday. The Baggies face Preston away next, followed by home clashes with Watford and Ipswich, before concluding against Sheffield Wednesday. A guilty verdict and deduction could relegate all three bottom clubs, echoing earlier punishments for Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday this season.
