A 60-year-old man has pleaded guilty to storing his elderly mother’s body in a chest freezer for over two years to continue claiming her pension and benefits, funding his lifestyle.

Discovery of the Body

Christopher Phillips’ mother, Sylvia Phillips, in her 80s, died sometime in 2023 at their home in Porthcawl, a Welsh seaside town. Instead of reporting her death, Phillips placed her body in a chest freezer. He accessed her bank account, withdrew funds from her savings, and collected her £1,000 monthly benefits.

South Wales Police conducted a welfare check in February 2026 after doctors noted a lack of contact with Mrs. Phillips. Officers discovered her frozen remains in the chest freezer and arrested Phillips immediately.

Court Proceedings

Phillips appeared at Cardiff Crown Court, where he admitted guilt on charges of preventing a lawful burial of his mother. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud for failing to notify the Department for Work and Pensions and Bridgend Council of her death, spanning from October 2022 to February 2026, though the actual death occurred in 2023.

Defense lawyer Ruth Smith stated: “There will be a basis of plea specifying the date of death in 2023. The defense seeks bank statements from the agencies. It is accepted that Mr. Phillips continued withdrawing funds from his mother’s account and lived on them.”

The court remanded Phillips in custody for sentencing in June.

Inquest Details

An inquest opening revealed uncertainty about Mrs. Phillips’ cause of death. Born in Gloucester in March 1936, she resided in Porthcawl. Coroner’s officer Joanne Webb explained: “Police received a call from a GP practice for a welfare check on an elderly patient. During the property search, they located the body of a female believed to be Sylvia Phillips in a chest freezer.”

A post-mortem by Dr. Stephen Leadbeatter at University Hospital of Wales on March 2 provided a provisional cause pending further tests. Coroner Graeme Hughes adjourned the hearing. Criminal investigations continue.

A South Wales Police spokesperson noted: “Officers attended an address on Poplar Crescent, Porthcawl, at 1:45 p.m. on February 17 following welfare concerns for a woman. A woman in her 80s was found dead. Investigations into the death are ongoing.”
