Investigation Sparks After Foul Odor Reports

In October 2023, officials in Penrose fielded complaints about a foul, abhorrent smell emanating from a building connected to Return to Nature Funeral Home. Police responded to investigate reports of liquid seeping under the door, uncovering the horrific scene inside.

Business Model and Operations

The operation, managed by spouses Jon and Carie Hallford, promoted itself as an economical, environmentally friendly option specializing in green burials without embalming chemicals. Carie served as the public face, handling client interactions and paperwork, where families described her as compassionate and reassuring. Jon operated behind the scenes, overseeing technical aspects and claiming 19 years of experience as a third-generation funeral director.

Cremation services started at $1,200 and were supposedly outsourced to a nearby crematory, after which the Hallfords delivered ashes to grieving relatives. Signs of prosperity included luxury vehicles, lavish vacations, and high-end shopping.

Facilities and Oversight Gaps

The business maintained an office for family consultations and a dilapidated 2,500-square-foot structure nearby used for storage. At the time, Colorado imposed no licensing or training mandates for funeral directors, resulting in no prior routine inspections.
