She plans to briefly discuss the incident and rising political violence on her late husband’s show this Wednesday, declaring, “Enough is enough.”
Chaos Erupts at Washington Hilton
Guests at the annual dinner, including top journalists, Hollywood celebrities, and Cabinet officials such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, faced pandemonium when 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, an educator from the Los Angeles area, opened fire. The venue, the same Washington Hilton where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981, saw attendees dive for cover after hearing loud shots just as appetizers arrived.
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump exited first, followed quickly by others. Kirk sobbed, “I just want to go home,” as security agents escorted her out. Wolf Blitzer, nearby inside the ballroom, described the gunman firing about six shots with a major weapon, the blasts echoing loudly.
Suspect Apprehended with Multiple Weapons
Law enforcement subdued Allen after he sprinted past a security checkpoint toward the ballroom doors. Authorities recovered a shotgun, handgun, and several knives from him. He faces firearms and assault charges. President Trump shared an image of the shirtless suspect face-down on the ground, calling him a “sick person—a very sick person” and a “lone wolf, a whack job.”
A Secret Service agent wearing a protective vest took a bullet at close range but is expected to recover fully. Trump noted, “I just spoke to the officer and he’s doing great.”
Kirk’s Personal Trauma Echoes Husband’s Death
The episode marks another brush with gun violence for Kirk, just seven months after her husband’s assassination at Utah Valley University. Derek Myers, sponsor of Turning Point Action, posted on X that Kirk was okay but very upset and crying.
In her statement, Kirk reflected, “Saturday was yet another traumatic example of the evil in our country and the continued rise in political violence. I’m taking time to spend with my family.”
Presidential Defiance and Next Steps
Addressing the nation hours later in his tuxedo, Trump asserted, “When you’re impactful, they go after you. They seem to think he was a lone wolf. We’re not going to let anybody take over our society.” The White House confirms the dinner will reschedule within 30 days for a bigger event, as the capital stays vigilant.
