Hamish Blake embraced his role as a devoted father by staying up all night to craft an intricate birthday cake for his son Sonny’s 12th birthday. The 44-year-old comedian, who shares Sonny, 12, and Rudy, 8, with wife Zoe, often surprises his children with elaborate homemade desserts.
The One Piece-Inspired Creation
On Friday evening, Blake dove into baking a cake themed around the popular manga series One Piece, specifically the iconic pirate ship Thousand Sunny, as requested by Sonny. “Evening, cake fans. Let’s cake,” he announced at the start, outlining his ambitious plan. “Essentially, we’re doing this pirate ship—it’s from a manga called One Piece—it’s called the Thousand Sunny, this ship.”
Confident from past baking experiences, Blake still voiced concerns over the chocolate sails featuring the signature skull print. “The sails have been demanded to be chocolate—edible sails with that famous skull print on it—that’s alright, that’s after midnight,” he noted.
A Late-Night Baking Marathon
Blake began with a schematic diagram and a glass of scotch, cutting Styrofoam to shape the boat base before mixing batter. He baked chocolate sponge layers and assembled the structure as the night progressed. By 6 a.m. Saturday, he affixed the challenging sails. “She’s heavy, she’s a little wonky, but she’s ours,” he said, holding one up.
Relieved yet triumphant, scotch in hand, Blake toasted his efforts. “Guys, you feel it, feel it. I haven’t had a drink for an hour or two, but it’s deserved.” He cautioned detail-oriented viewers: “I just want to warn you everything’s okay, but there was a hasty chopping of the final sail and a slight miscalculation. If you’re a sailor or very, very picky nautical person, I assume it will anger you. For everyone else it’s gonna look great.”
Blake completed the stunning replica at 6:23 a.m., posing proudly beside it. “Happy birthday Sonny boy,” he captioned the image. “I’d pull a hundred all-nighters for you, mate.”
Family Approval
Zoe Blake praised her husband’s dedication on social media, sharing the finished cake. “Ten years of waking to find an overnight masterpiece. Bravo to you and this and your 6.30am finish,” she wrote.
