Belfast Violence Erupts Ahead of Crucial PMQs

Political tensions are high as Keir Starmer prepares for a confrontational session of Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) today, with the escalating chaos in Northern Ireland expected to dominate the agenda. The situation reached a critical point last night when masked individuals forced residents to flee their homes. The disorder followed a violent knife attack in the north of the city on Monday, which saw multiple vehicles and properties set ablaze.

Starmer Condemns ‘Shocking and Unacceptable’ Violence

Sir Keir Starmer has strongly condemned the unrest, labeling the events in Belfast as “shocking and completely unacceptable.” He stated, “It is clear that people were targeted last night because of their background and I will not tolerate it.” The Labour leader took to social media to further his views, posting on X (formerly Twitter): “There is no justification for the violence and disorder that we saw threatening our communities, nor for those who encouraged it, online or elsewhere.” He emphasized that “Appealing for calm must be the priority.”

The recent violence follows a brutal knife attack that sent shockwaves through Belfast. Graphic footage of the incident circulated widely on social media. A 30-year-old Sudanese national, who had been granted leave to remain in the UK until 2028, has been charged with attempted murder and is scheduled to appear in court today.

Badenoch and Farage React to the Disturbances

Kemi Badenoch, addressing the incident, ed her deep dismay, stating, “I’m absolutely horrified. It is a horrific incident.” Reform UK leader Nigel Farage commented on the suspect’s leave-to-remain status, suggesting such permissions are issued too freely. He described the assault as “shocking, barbaric, ghastly.”

Political Landscape Ahead of By-Election

Today’s PMQs is anticipated to be particularly fraught for the opposition leader, especially with the Makerfield by-election looming next week. Starmer is also scheduled to be in France for the G7 summit on Wednesday, meaning this is his final PMQs session before that event. Meanwhile, campaigning in Makerfield continues with Andy Burnham and Robert Kenyon on the trail. Nigel Farage is slated to hold a press conference at 3pm in the constituency.
