Woman Airlifted to Hospital After Shark Encounter
A woman is in a critical condition after a shark attack at Sydney’s Coogee Beach on Saturday morning. Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after 11 am, following reports of a swimmer being bitten.
Bystanders acted swiftly, pulling the woman from the water and beginning first aid treatment before the arrival of paramedics and police. Officials confirmed the woman, believed to be in her 30s, sustained severe injuries to her arm and leg.
Emergency Response and Beach Closures
Ambulance paramedics continued the urgent treatment at the scene. To facilitate the arrival of a medical helicopter, police cleared the nearby Coogee Oval. A Careflight helicopter subsequently airlifted the woman to a hospital for further care.
In response to the incident, several popular beaches in the vicinity, including Coogee, Clovelly, and Bronte, have been temporarily closed to the public. This measure is in place to ensure safety as investigations into the shark’s presence and behavior continue.

This event marks one of several shark-related incidents reported in Australian waters this year. Since the beginning of 2026, nine shark attacks have been recorded nationwide, with four resulting in fatalities.
