Tragic Discovery in French Flat: Young Child Found Beside Deceased Parent
Emergency responders made a harrowing discovery in a Montagnac, France apartment on Thursday, June 4th, finding a severely malnourished four-year-old girl lying beside her deceased mother. The 40-year-old woman, believed to have suffered from epilepsy, was found unresponsive by officials responding to a welfare check. The young child, discovered in a state of malnutrition, dehydration, and shock, was immediately transported to a local hospital where she is now recovering under the care of a family member.
Investigation Underway into Cause of Death
As of June 11th, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the mother’s death, with initial assessments suggesting a natural cause. There were no reports of disturbances from neighbors, and no signs of forced entry or violence were found at the scene. While a post-mortem examination is pending, preliminary indications suggest the woman may have died from suffocation following an epileptic seizure. It is believed the young girl was unable to open the door for help, as the key was reportedly left in the lock.
Alert Raised by Concerned Teacher
The tragic situation came to light when the child’s nursery teacher alerted police after the girl’s uncharacteristic absence from school. Attempts by the teacher to contact the mother or her relatives proved unsuccessful. Further reports indicate that concern had been growing since Sunday, May 31st, when the mother failed to respond to communications from both family and neighbors.
Community Responds to ‘Indescribable Scene’
Philippe Audoui, first deputy mayor of Montagnac, commented on the critical state of the child, stating, “She wouldn’t have lasted another day.” The mother, who lived alone and was not believed to have a partner, was described by neighbors as a private individual. A psychological support team was established to assist emergency personnel and others who witnessed the scene, described by some as an “indescribable scene of horror.”
Rescue Operation Details
The investigation is being led by the Pézenas gendarmerie in collaboration with the public prosecutor’s office in Béziers. One responding officer described the scene as “horrific” and deeply upsetting, noting a strong odor upon entering the premises. Upon arrival at the social housing estate, officers found no response at the door. Local gendarmes were called, and firefighters accessed the first-floor apartment by using a ladder and breaking a window.
