Life-Altering Moments Fuel Political Drive

Two harrowing near-death experiences in his early adulthood profoundly influenced Nigel Farage’s perspective, steering him away from a purely business-focused future toward a deep engagement with politics. These pivotal moments instilled in him a desire to pursue a more meaningful path beyond personal success.

A Childhood in Kent and a Brush with Fate

Born in April 1964, Farage spent his formative years in the serene village of Downe, Kent. His childhood was characterized by an idyllic, outdoorsy lifestyle, as recalled by a childhood friend, John Hudson. “We led an outdoorsy life. It was safe. There was a sense of freedom. We’d wander off to the woods for the afternoon,” Hudson remembers. “In those days, children knew a lot about flowers and trees and wildlife. Nigel and I certainly did.”

In November 1985, on his way home after work, Farage’s life took a dramatic turn. Exiting Orpington station, he was struck by a car while crossing the road. The impact sent him airborne, landing heavily on his head. Transported to Bromley General Hospital, his blood alcohol levels prevented immediate general anesthesia, requiring sedation before surgery. Miraculously, he sustained no brain damage, though he suffered significant injuries to his left leg, which narrowly avoided amputation, broken ribs, lost teeth, and lifelong tinnitus. The accident necessitated hospitalization until January 1986 and a lengthy period with his leg in a cast, forcing him to abandon competitive golf due to compromised hand-eye coordination. Amidst his recovery, however, he met and fell in love with a nurse, Clare Hayes, who would become his first wife.

A Second Health Scare and a Glimpse of Private Healthcare

A second stark reminder of his mortality occurred on Boxing Day in 1986. While at a local pub, Farage experienced severe pain, initially misdiagnosed as a twisted testicle requiring immediate surgery. Further examination at a different hospital suggested an infection, with antibiotics prescribed instead. Weeks of persistent agony and alarming swelling led to a consultation with his GP, who referred him to an NHS consultant. Still experiencing discomfort, and with his left testicle significantly swollen, Farage sought private medical advice through his employer’s insurance. This led to a diagnosis of testicular cancer and the subsequent removal of his testicle. With the possibility of secondary tumors, Farage braced for the worst, even confiding in his mother that he saw no point in a haircut, anticipating chemotherapy. However, after a tense six months of monitoring, he received the unexpected news of being cancer-free.

This experience left Farage with a profound realization about the healthcare system. He has stated, “It has left me with a clear belief that without private healthcare I would probably be dead.” The close calls with mortality solidified his conviction that time was a precious commodity and that he needed to dedicate himself to something more significant.

The Growing Influence of Political Ideals

These brushes with mortality, coupled with his burgeoning political views, began to shape his future. By the late 1980s, Farage, who had become increasingly aligned with Thatcherite principles, grew concerned about Britain’s trajectory towards closer integration with Europe. He was particularly wary of the implications of the Single European Act and Margaret Thatcher’s warnings against the erosion of national sovereignty by European institutions. His work as a global commodities broker exposed him to international markets, leading him to believe that restrictive European regulations would hinder Britain’s economic potential.

His evolving political stance became evident to friends. Schoolfriend Nick Owen noted, “When we left school he was a member of the Old Boys’ Golfing Society, but by the late ’80s we’d kind of dropped him because he became a bit of a Euro bore.”

The 1989 European elections and a Green Party broadcast discussing the potential dangers of the Maastricht Treaty further galvanized his views. While he never joined the Green Party, their emphasis on the potential for unelected bureaucrats to control citizens resonated deeply with him.

Career Shifts and Personal Transformations

Farage’s career in finance saw significant shifts. After a tumultuous incident at the London Metal Exchange in late 1993, he resigned from his position at R J Rouse and subsequently founded his own firm, Farage Futures, in early 1994. This period marked a time of relative autonomy and intense focus on his global trading business, often requiring early mornings to accommodate international markets.

During this time, he also experienced a personal transformation. By 1994, his marriage to Clare had deteriorated, with both parties acknowledging they had fallen in love with others and had largely been living separate lives. The divorce was finalized by 1997. Farage has spoken of marrying too young and not being ready for the responsibilities of a committed relationship in his twenties.

A New Chapter and Political Ascendancy

Approaching his thirties, and driven by a desire to dedicate more time to his political aspirations, Farage embarked on what he termed his “new life.” This period of personal and professional recalibration ultimately paved the way for his prominent role in British politics.

Decades later, Farage has become a significant figure in the modern political landscape. He has led two different political parties to victories in national elections, achieving success in the 2014 European elections with UKIP and in the 2019 European elections with the Brexit Party. He continues to be a formidable presence, now aiming to lead Reform UK to power in the upcoming General Election.
