Portugal’s World Cup Squad Rejects Beach Criticism

Portugal’s national football team is pushing back against suggestions that their pre-World Cup preparations are being undermined by excessive time spent at the beach. The squad, gearing up for their opening match against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday, has faced scrutiny from Portuguese media regarding their use of the beach facilities at their base in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Climate Acclimatization Emphasized

Matheus Nunes, a player for Manchester City, addressed these concerns directly during a press conference, stating that beach excursions are a deliberate and integral part of their preparation. “Spending a lot of time on the beach is a deliberate part of our preparation,” Nunes explained. “We go to the beach in the mornings to get used to the climate. That seems perfectly normal to me.”

Nunes highlighted the stark contrast between the Florida climate and the conditions he experiences in Manchester, where he plays football year-round. “For example, I played football in Manchester all year round and there is very little sun there. A huge difference compared to the conditions here,” he added.

Balancing Relaxation and Training

The midfielder stressed that the perception of their beach activities should not overshadow their commitment to training. “The impression should not be given that we spend more time on the beach than training,” Nunes asserted. “As I said: we go to the beach in the mornings and do our normal training sessions in the afternoons.”

The team has been seen enjoying downtime in the heat, with several players, including Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias, walking along the sand. Joao Felix was also observed taking a dip, as were other members of the squad who relaxed on sun loungers at their resort. Portugal arrived at the World Cup venue last Friday, later than many other participating nations.

Unexpected Wildlife Encounters

While the beachside relaxation has been a regular occurrence, the squad’s adaptation has not been without its challenges. Reports indicate that some players were hesitant to leave their hotel rooms after at least four alligators were sighted near their practice facilities. While such wildlife is typical for the region, it came as a surprise to some of the athletes.

The intense heat is expected to be a significant factor in all of Portugal’s group stage matches. The team will face Uzbekistan in Houston before a later fixture against Colombia in Miami on June 27.

Ronaldo Looks Ahead to Final World Cup

All eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo as he participates in his final World Cup, with many anticipating a memorable conclusion to his illustrious career. When asked about his current condition, the Portuguese star expressed confidence. “Physically? I’m fine – have you not seen my matches?” Ronaldo stated. “It has been good but tiring because we’ve worked hard. We’ve had the upper hand in our matches, but what matters most is when the ball starts rolling on the 17th, in the first game, and then when the pressure really starts to mount – that’s when we’ll see the true champions.”
