An 81-year-old man has been arrested in the village of Mimizan, southwest France, following a fatal incident on a pétanque court. The suspect is accused of striking his 68-year-old opponent in the face with a metal boule, leading to the victim’s death. Reports suggest a long-standing rivalry between the two men may have fueled the violent dispute.
The Incident Unfolds
The deadly confrontation occurred on Wednesday during a game at a local court. Witnesses state that an argument escalated into a physical altercation between members of rival clubs. The older player allegedly retrieved a heavy metal ball and struck his opponent. The 68-year-old victim reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after and, despite the intervention of emergency services, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dispute Over Court Access
Initial investigations indicate the disagreement may have stemmed from members of a nearby club requesting to use the Mimizan court. The request came as temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius. While the precise catalyst for the argument remains under investigation, authorities are examining whether the impact of the metal boule directly caused the fatality. The 81-year-old suspect is currently in custody and faces formal charges.

Previous Pétanque-Related Fatalities
This incident follows other tragic events involving pétanque equipment. In 2023, a Dutch tourist died five days after sustaining critical injuries from an exploding steel pétanque ball. The ball had reportedly been placed near a fire pit during a bachelor party. The explosion allegedly caused severe facial burns and embedded metal fragments in the victim’s skull.
The explosion occurred in Stavelot, Belgium, during an evening gathering. It is alleged that participants placed pétanque balls in or under a fire pit, leading to one ball becoming intensely hot and detonating. A neighbor described the sound as similar to a gas bottle explosion and noted the immediate arrival of an ambulance and medical helicopter.
Paramedics treated the injured man, who was then airlifted to the University Hospital in Liege and placed in a medically induced coma. Local police described the explosion’s impact as comparable to a grenade, with fragments penetrating the victim’s skull.
The family of the deceased tourist expressed their profound shock and grief, stating, “We are shocked by the sudden death, he will be greatly missed.” They have requested privacy to mourn.
