Minnesota Woman Accused of Child Abuse After Sending QR Code Evidence

A Minnesota woman is facing serious charges after allegedly sending authorities a QR code containing graphic evidence of her own abuse of infants. Kimberly Faith Christy, 37, of Moorhead, has been detained on multiple felony counts, including first-degree criminal sexual conduct and using a minor in a sexual performance. The unusual self-incriminating evidence was sent via email to the Clay County Attorney’s Office on June 28, accompanied by a message stating her intent to surrender.

QR Code Leads to Disturbing Digital Evidence

Initially, the email containing the QR code was flagged as a potential phishing scam due to its highly unusual nature. However, upon investigation, law enforcement officials were shocked by the contents linked through the digital code. Prosecutors allege that the trove of pictures and videos depicted Christy sexually abusing multiple infants, some of whom could be heard crying and screaming in the footage.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators concluded that the digital evidence showed Christy engaging in sexual abuse of infants. The complaint details specific instances, including a video dated March 7, 2018, which allegedly shows Christy sexually abusing a girl between six months and two years old, identified as Child 2, while the child was screaming. Another video, dated November 3, 2013, reportedly shows an attack on Child 1, described as a very young infant, who can be heard crying throughout the recording. Photographs dated October 6, 2019, are also cited, showing further alleged abuse of a girl suspected to be Child 2.

Suspect Admits to Assaulting Children

During an interview with detectives, Christy reportedly admitted to sexually assaulting both children depicted in the videos. The exact relationship between Christy and the alleged victims remains unclear at this time.

Charges and Potential Penalties

Kimberly Faith Christy has been formally charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of using a minor in a sexual performance. She has not yet entered a plea to these charges. If convicted, Christy faces severe penalties. The charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct each carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $40,000 fine. The counts related to using a minor in a sexual performance have a maximum sentence of 10 years apiece, along with a potential fine of up to $20,000 for each count. Given the severity of the allegations, a conviction could result in a life sentence.

Bail and Legal Proceedings

Clay County District Court ordered Christy to be held on a $500,000 bond. This amount could be reduced to $250,000 if she agreed to comply with a strict set of release conditions. These conditions would include remaining within the boundaries of Minnesota and Cass County, which is located just across the North Dakota border from Moorhead.

Background of the Accused

Publicly available information indicates that Christy is a parent to multiple children, including a teenage daughter. Social media profiles suggest she has been in a long-term relationship with Mitchell Spitzmiller, 40. Her most recent listed employment was as a grill operator at a McDonald’s restaurant.

Partner Also Faces Legal Issues

Mitchell Spitzmiller himself has prior interactions with law enforcement. Earlier this year, he was charged with second-degree assault for allegedly attacking an individual with a hammer, according to court documents. Spitzmiller has not yet entered a plea, and his trial is scheduled for later this month.

Conclusion

The case of Kimberly Faith Christy presents a disturbing scenario where alleged perpetrators may have provided the evidence leading to their own apprehension. The graphic nature of the alleged crimes and the unusual method of self-incrimination have drawn significant attention. Legal proceedings are ongoing, with the suspect currently in custody and facing severe potential penalties should she be found guilty of the charges.
