Clothing Images Released in Search for Hamish Tait’s Victims

Authorities have released images of children’s clothing items as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged child abuse by former childcare worker Hamish Tait. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) are appealing to the public for assistance, hoping that the unique garments will be recognised by parents, carers, or members of the community, potentially identifying further victims.

Investigation Details and Released Images

The released images depict several distinct clothing items, including a dinosaur puffer jacket, shorts with a blue pattern, a T-shirt featuring an animal pattern, and a two-tone T-shirt. These items were reportedly discovered on electronic devices seized during the investigation. Police believe the photographs of these clothes were taken between 2018 and 2023. The alleged incidents occurred at childcare centres located in Rouse Hill and Putney, both in Sydney’s north-west.

Detective Acting Inspector Emmanuel Tsardoulias of the AFP urged anyone with information, regardless of its perceived significance, to come forward. “We understand this week’s news about Operation Moonbi has been tough for members of our community,” Tsardoulias stated. “The abuse of trust we allege has occurred is confronting. Our investigation will continue, and we thank the public for their co-operation, patience and support as we continue to make inquiries.”

Hamish Tait’s Charges and Arrest

Hamish Tait, 35, faces a significant number of charges related to the creation and distribution of child abuse material. He has been charged with a total of 329 offences. These charges stem from alleged activities at various childcare centres he worked at or visited, primarily across Sydney. The AFP believes these offences occurred at several of the 62 centres identified in the investigation.

Tait was arrested and charged in July 2025. At the time of his arrest, law enforcement seized approximately 2.5 million files from electronic devices at his residence. He was initially charged with eight counts of online child abuse material offences. Further charges were added in April, June, and July of 2026, bringing the total to 329. These include 162 counts of producing child abuse material and 81 counts of filming a person engaged in a private act without consent.

Identifying Victims and Investigation Scope

The investigation, codenamed Operation Moonbi, is actively working to identify all alleged victims. Police have identified 158 potential victims but are still seeking to identify 22 of them. Authorities have noted that some of these individuals may now be adults. The timeframe for the alleged offences spans from 2018 to 2023.

A non-publication order, initially granted to the AFP to safeguard the investigation’s integrity, was lifted on Monday following legal proceedings. This lifting of the order has allowed for the public release of information, including the images of the clothing, to aid in identifying further victims.

Childcare Provider Response

Several of the childcare centres implicated in the investigation are operated by the provider Fit Kidz. In response to the allegations, Fit Kidz issued a statement expressing their profound distress. “We are shocked, disgusted, saddened and sorry for the pain that has been caused,” the statement read. The company emphasised its commitment to child safety, stating, “Our focus has always been and will continue to be supporting those affected and strengthening the safety of children entrusted to us.”
