Amo Racing Enters National Hunt Sphere with Diligo

Amo Racing, a prominent name in Flat racing ownership, has made its first foray into the National Hunt discipline with the acquisition of a share in Diligo, a four-year-old gelding now under the care of trainer Max Comley. This move marks a significant diversification for the ownership group, traditionally focused on flat racing.

From Flat Prospects to Jumps Ambitions

Diligo, a well-bred son of Wootton Bassett, initially showed promise on the Flat. He had two starts for trainer Joseph O’Brien before being entered into the Newmarket July Sales. However, his transition to the sales ring took an unexpected turn, leading to his current role in National Hunt racing.

An Unforeseen Entry into Jumps Racing

Kia Joorabchian, a key figure behind Amo Racing, detailed the unusual circumstances surrounding Diligo’s move to jumps racing on the Nick Luck Daily Podcast. Joorabchian explained that Amo Racing co-owned Diligo with Al Shaqab. The initial plan was for Al Shaqab to sell their share, while Amo Racing considered retaining theirs or even buying out their partner.

During discussions with the consignor, a misunderstanding occurred. Joorabchian recounted, “the consignor made a little bit of a boo-boo… he didn’t understand me and I didn’t understand him, and he was bought by a jumps trainer.” This accidental purchase by a trainer focused on jumps racing presented an unexpected opportunity.

Instead of parting ways, Amo Racing approached the jumps trainer, who lacked an owner for the horse. “I’d love for you to stay in’,” the trainer reportedly said, leading to Amo Racing retaining their share and thus acquiring their first National Hunt horse.

Excitement and Future Possibilities

Despite the unconventional path, Joorabchian expressed considerable enthusiasm for this new venture. He shared, “I’m quite excited about it.” He also mentioned receiving a video of Diligo’s initial experiences with hurdles, noting, “he looks great.” The horse was seen knocking down poles, indicating his first taste of jumping obstacles.

Potential for Expansion within Amo Racing

The success and enjoyment derived from Diligo could pave the way for further expansion into National Hunt racing for Amo Racing. Joorabchian hinted at the possibility of identifying other horses within the current Amo Racing stable that might excel over jumps.

He also drew inspiration from a past experience where a horse he sold, Poniros to Tony Bloom, went on to win a Grade One race at Cheltenham on its debut over jumps. This success reignited Joorabchian’s interest in the discipline, prompting him to consider its potential.

The strategic advantage of having jumpers, particularly during the quieter winter months, was also highlighted. Joorabchian noted the common sentiment among Flat racing owners during winter, expressing a longing for the Flat season to commence. He suggested that having “three or four jumpers might not be the worst thing in the world just to have a bit of fun with,” implying that National Hunt horses can provide valuable racing and entertainment during the off-season.

A Strategic Diversification

Amo Racing’s move into National Hunt racing represents a strategic diversification of their ownership portfolio. While Flat racing demands speed and precise breeding, National Hunt racing tests a horse’s stamina, jumping ability, and resilience over longer distances and challenging fences or hurdles.

By acquiring a share in Diligo and entrusting him to Max Comley, a trainer known for his work with jumps horses, Amo Racing is positioning themselves to explore a new facet of the sport. This diversification could offer new avenues for success and broaden their appeal within the wider racing community.

The Role of Max Comley

Max Comley, a trainer based at the Seven Barrows yard in Lambourn, has been making strides in the National Hunt sphere. His appointment to train Diligo signifies the growing confidence in his capabilities to develop and prepare horses for the rigors of jumps racing. Comley’s experience with young horses and his ability to nurture talent will be crucial in Diligo’s development as a National Hunt competitor.

Looking Ahead

The journey of Diligo under Amo Racing’s ownership in the National Hunt sphere will be closely watched. His initial training with hurdles and his potential to compete in upcoming races will provide valuable insights into Amo Racing’s future involvement in this discipline. The unexpected acquisition has opened a new chapter, filled with the promise of exciting racing and the potential for further growth in the world of jumps.
