A 25-year-old Afghan national, identified as Kambiz H., has been arrested in London in connection with an alleged gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl in Dortmund, Germany. He is currently on trial alongside two other men, Quais W., 20, and Burhanulla N., 19, at the Dortmund Regional Court. The indictment alleges that the three men approached the victim in the early hours of September 21, 2024, at a bus stop in the city’s northern district.

Allegations of Exploitation and Filmed Attack

According to public prosecutor Fabian Weishaupt, the defendants allegedly persuaded the young woman to accompany them to an apartment. There, they reportedly provided her with alcohol, leading to her losing consciousness due to intoxication. Prosecutors contend that the men then exploited her vulnerable state. The charges include gang-raping the victim and filming the assault. Evidence found on a confiscated iPhone 13, which the court is expected to review, reportedly includes footage showing the defendants laughing during the alleged attack. One of the accused is also alleged to have attempted to open the victim’s eyes during the incident.

The trial, which commenced on Thursday, is set to include testimony from the victim on its third day. Court documents indicate that all three defendants have prior interactions with law enforcement. Quais W. has been associated with charges of robbery and assaulting police officers, Kambiz H. with assault and threats, and Burhanulla N. with robbery and drug trafficking, according to reports from German media outlet Bild.

Broader Context of Sexual Assault Allegations

This case emerges amidst ongoing concerns about sexual violence and exploitation. In a separate incident reported in May, a 32-year-old Colombian tourist alleged she was abducted and subjected to a 72-hour ordeal of gang rape in Rome, Italy. The woman reportedly met a man near Rome’s Termini Station who offered to sell her hashish. She claims she was then led to a van and subsequently abducted by another individual, who drove her to an abandoned building on the city’s outskirts. This building was reportedly occupied by at least 22 individuals.

Details of the Rome Incident

The victim stated that she was held captive for three days, during which she was allegedly drugged and threatened with death while being subjected to repeated sexual assaults by five men. Her mobile phone and wallet were also reportedly stolen. After managing to escape, she was found by a passerby and taken to a local hospital. Medical examinations revealed injuries consistent with sexual assault and drug administration, prompting a police investigation.

Italian authorities launched an investigation and, within days, identified and apprehended five suspects. These individuals were charged with gang rape, with the circumstances of the victim’s helplessness cited as an aggravating factor. The arrested men were identified as Saidykhan Lamin and Karamba Kanteh, both Gambian nationals aged 29 and 38; Harouna Traore, a 43-year-old from Mali; and Nigerians Isibor Wisdom and Paul Nwabueze, aged 29 and 39. Investigators also looked into the potential involvement of at least three other individuals, including the person who initially lured the victim and those responsible for transporting her and housing her in the abandoned structure.

During a raid on the building where the woman was allegedly held, 22 non-EU citizens with irregular immigration status were identified. Eleven of them received expulsion orders. The victim later identified five of the arrested men as her alleged assailants through photographic identification.

Legal Proceedings and International Cooperation

The arrest of Kambiz H. in London highlights the international cooperation often required in prosecuting serious criminal offenses. Extradition processes and cross-border investigations are crucial in bringing alleged perpetrators to justice, regardless of their location. The ongoing trial in Dortmund will seek to establish the facts surrounding the alleged assault on the 17-year-old, with the court’s examination of digital evidence and victim testimony forming key components of the proceedings.

The legal systems in both Germany and Italy are designed to prosecute such grave crimes, emphasizing the protection of victims and the accountability of offenders. The outcomes of these trials will depend on the evidence presented and the legal standards applied in each jurisdiction.
