SHARE

A devastating head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough has resulted in the deaths of seven people, including two police officers. The crash occurred at approximately 3:39 AM when a Volkswagen Passat, reportedly driving at high speed and erratically, collided with a marked armed-response vehicle. The two officers, PC Matthew Blades, 38, and PC Tom Clough, 37, were responding to a situation when their patrol car was struck. All seven individuals involved in the collision were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers Killed in the Line of Duty

Cleveland Police confirmed that PC Blades and PC Clough were traveling on the correct side of the A66 in their marked vehicle when the incident took place. Flags at the force’s Middlesbrough headquarters were lowered to half-mast in tribute to the fallen officers. Chief Constable Victoria Fuller described the loss as an “unimaginable loss” and stated that the officers were “brave officers, protecting our communities and serving our residents, who didn’t return home to their families at the end of their shift.” The Cleveland Police Federation chairman, Lauren Somerville, expressed the profound grief felt by the force, calling the situation “unfathomable.” Local MP Anna Turley echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the officers “went to work to keep people safe, and they should have come home to their families.”

Circumstances of the Collision

Ring doorbell footage from a nearby property revealed that the Volkswagen Passat had been traveling at speed through Middlesbrough’s streets shortly before the fatal crash. Police had reportedly initiated a pursuit, but it was called off when the Passat turned onto the A66, entering the path of the oncoming patrol car. It is understood that the two officers who died were not actively engaged in the pursuit at the moment of impact. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Inquiries into Passat Occupants’ Activities

Among the five civilian occupants of the Volkswagen Passat who died in the crash was 18-year-old Makai Saddington. Reports have emerged of TikTok videos posted by Saddington in the months leading up to the crash, which appear to show him participating in high-speed police chases. Some of these clips, set to music, depict vehicles being driven at excessive speeds through residential areas and playing fields, with police vehicles visible in pursuit. Other videos associated with an account linked to Saddington showed cars being driven recklessly and even set alight, with individuals in balaclavas posing in vehicles. These posts reflect a concerning trend observed on social media, where some young individuals film themselves evading police at high speeds, seemingly in pursuit of online notoriety.

Broader Concerns and Similar Incidents

The tragic events on the A66 have drawn parallels to a similar incident in the Irish Republic just days prior. In that case, five teenagers died when a stolen BMW, traveling the wrong way down the M9 motorway, collided head-on with another vehicle. The occupants of the BMW were reportedly filming themselves during the incident. The driver of the other vehicle, a seven-year-old boy, and three sisters sustained serious injuries and remain hospitalized. These incidents have amplified concerns about dangerous driving trends among young people and the influence of social media platforms in potentially encouraging such behavior. Professor Mary Aiken, a specialist in forensic cyber-psychology, has noted that individuals engaged in such activities often have a divided focus, with one foot in the real world and another in cyberspace, driven by the desire for online validation.

Victims and Community Response

While the five civilian victims of the A66 crash have yet to be formally named by authorities, some individuals have been identified locally, including Michael Ray, Theo Rae, and Cole Worthy. Makai Saddington’s mother posted a poignant message on social media following his death, expressing her grief and disbelief. It is understood that Saddington and some of his companions had connections to the traveler community. Residents near the crash site reported being awakened by the sound of high-speed vehicles and sirens. Emergency services, including multiple ambulances, paramedics, and a hazardous response team, were dispatched to the scene. The North East Ambulance Service confirmed that despite extensive efforts, multiple fatalities occurred.

Official Statements and Investigations

Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp offered their condolences to the families of all those affected by the tragedy. Chief Constable Fuller urged the public to avoid speculation and to respect the privacy of the bereaved families while the Independent Office for Police Conduct conducts its investigation. The focus remains on understanding the full circumstances of the collision and supporting the families who have suffered such profound losses.

Conclusion

The fatal crash on the A66 serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of dangerous driving and the risks associated with high-speed pursuits. The loss of two police officers in the line of duty, alongside five young lives, has sent shockwaves through the community. Investigations are ongoing to determine the precise factors that led to this catastrophic event, with particular attention being paid to the activities of the occupants of the Volkswagen Passat in the hours preceding the collision.
