Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has publicly urged his teammate Cody Gakpo to remain at the club, amidst reports of intensifying discussions between Manchester City and Gakpo regarding a potential transfer. The Dutch winger, who has featured in Liverpool’s opening two Premier League fixtures, is reportedly the subject of a significant offer, with clubs said to be negotiating a deal valued at approximately £85 million.
Van Dijk’s Plea for Gakpo to Stay
When questioned about the speculation surrounding Gakpo’s future, Van Dijk expressed a clear desire for the player to stay. “What do you think? He’s a quality player. I think we should keep quality players,” Van Dijk stated. He added, “Let’s see what the next few days bring. I want him to stay not only because he’s a quality player but also because he’s a friend of mine. He’s very important to us.” This sentiment underscores Gakpo’s perceived value to the Liverpool squad, both for his on-field contributions and his role within the team’s dynamic.
Liverpool’s Transfer Strategy and Potential Replacements
Reports suggest that Liverpool would only consider sanctioning Gakpo’s departure if they secure alternative winger signings. The club is reportedly nearing an agreement for Bradley Barcola, with a deal potentially worth £123 million. In addition to Barcola, Liverpool has also been linked with other wingers, including Ismaila Sarr of Crystal Palace and Yankuba Minteh of Brighton. Barcola is understood to be in England to finalize his medical and sign a five-year contract.
Van Dijk on New Signings and Team Performance
Addressing the potential arrival of Barcola, Van Dijk acknowledged his quality. “He’s a good player, that’s the only thing I can say,” he commented. Van Dijk also highlighted Liverpool’s enduring appeal to top talent, stating, “I don’t think there’s any doubt that a club like Liverpool is very attractive to very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world.” He acknowledged the team is in a period of transition, emphasizing that players must be committed to being part of it. “You either want to be a part of it or you don’t,” he remarked. Describing Barcola’s attributes, Van Dijk noted his pace, recalling a goal he scored against Chelsea. He concluded by saying, “If he comes here then he will be welcomed with open arms.”

Van Dijk also conveyed his dissatisfaction with Liverpool’s performance at the beginning of the season. Looking ahead, Van Dijk outlined key areas for improvement. “We have to score more, concede less, dominate more with and without the ball.” He specifically pointed to the team’s home record against Nottingham Forest as an area of concern, noting that the team’s inability to secure wins at home against Forest in recent seasons is unacceptable. “Nottingham Forest have come here the last three seasons and remained unbeaten. That shouldn’t happen. In all the years I’ve been at the club it hasn’t happened.” Van Dijk concluded with a strong call for collective effort and unity between the players and the supporters. “It’s down to us to make sure we are a unit – every member of the squad together with our fans.”
