A Life Remembered: The Book ‘Ricky Hatton: The Light That Never Goes Out’

The world of boxing was deeply affected by the passing of Ricky Hatton on September 14, 2025, at the age of 46. An inquest into his death concluded with a narrative verdict, acknowledging that while he died by his own hand, his ultimate intentions remained unclear. The outpouring of grief was significant, with thousands of fans lining the streets of Greater Manchester on October 10, 2025, for a 14-mile funeral procession. The memorial service, attended by 900 mourners, featured a eulogy delivered by broadcaster and commentator Adam Smith. Smith, a long-time observer of Hatton’s career, has compiled these tributes in his book, Ricky Hatton: The Light That Never Goes Out. He spoke with members of Hatton’s family and several former partners to create this in-memoriam.

Jennifer Dooley’s Reflections

Jennifer Dooley, who was engaged to Hatton and shared two daughters, Millie and Fearne, with him, spoke candidly about her enduring connection to the boxer. She had previously spoken only at his inquest. Dooley expressed a premonition about his lifespan, stating, “I always knew he wasn’t going to be an old man.” She described Hatton as having a “childlike” quality, suggesting he may not have fully transitioned into an independent adult, which she believed contributed to his strong bond with their children. “Rick’s favourite time was with his girls,” she recalled. Dooley highlighted Hatton’s vulnerability regarding mental health, noting that many people have confided in her about their own struggles since his passing. She characterized him as deeply empathetic, viewing life broadly and often prioritizing others. “He thought he was the same as everyone else, with small children, trying to navigate life, but he was actually a trailblazer,” she commented. Despite his complexities, “He was as daft as a brush but also so switched on, a contradiction, yes, but he felt very deeply.” She remembered his affectionate and cuddly nature with their daughters, who “loved him hugely.”

Hatton and Dooley began their relationship shortly after his world title victory against Kostya Tszyu in 2005. They became engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2009. Their relationship faced challenges over the years due to Hatton’s struggles with alcoholism and substance abuse, leading to their separation in 2016. However, they maintained a cordial relationship and successfully co-parented their children. Hatton also had a son, Campbell, from a previous relationship in 2001, and became a grandfather to Campbell’s daughter, Lyla.

Claire Sweeney’s Fond Memories

Actress Claire Sweeney, who dated Hatton in early 2024 after knowing him for years through various events, also shared her experiences for the book. Their connection deepened when they participated in ITV’s “Dancing on Ice,” leading to their red-carpet debut in May 2024. Reflecting on their time together, Sweeney remarked, “I was better than him on the ice.” She fondly recalled, “I miss the laughter, even after we split, we were great pals.” Although their relationship lasted less than a year, ending in December 2024, they remained close friends. Sweeney expressed gratitude for their time together: “I was blessed to be part of his life.”

She emphasized Hatton’s role as a father, stating, “He was such a good dad and I have a son so I understood.” Sweeney noted Hatton’s ability to connect with his friends and his engaging personality. “Ricky was the joker and although he had his deep moments, the only thing I noticed was that he became unusually reflective. He always had so much time for people.” She cherished simple moments, like cooking healthy meals together, and even introduced him to an air fryer, which she humorously noted “changed his life.” Sweeney also remembered their shared enjoyment of watching boxing movies in his home cinema, describing him as “so normal” during these times. “I saw his vulnerabilities. He was not frightened to show me then. He was extreme, but he was wonderful. I loved being with all his mates at the pub on the estate or having a sing-song at home. So much laughter. He made me laugh so much.”

Maria Ganner’s Tribute

The book also includes a tribute from Maria Ganner, a former production assistant at Sky Sports who reportedly had a brief relationship with Hatton before he met Dooley. Ganner spoke about her lasting connection with Hatton’s family, feeling “so lucky and privileged” that his relationships had allowed her to maintain these bonds. What she misses most is “his sense of humour. He always made me laugh.” Ganner remembered his ability to “find the good in a bad situation” and his relatable nature, describing him as “a normal, humble man with absolutely no airs and graces.”

A Boxing Icon’s Legacy

Ricky Hatton’s career was marked by significant highs and lows. From his iconic IBF world title win against Kostya Tszyu in front of a home crowd to his notable defeats against Floyd Mayweather in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009, Hatton left an indelible mark on British boxing history. He became a defining figure for the city of Manchester, celebrated for his fighting spirit and relatable persona.

Conclusion

The book Ricky Hatton: The Light That Never Goes Out offers a deeply personal and intimate portrait of Ricky Hatton, moving beyond his boxing achievements to explore the man behind the legend. Through the voices of those closest to him, including Jennifer Dooley, Claire Sweeney, and Maria Ganner, the publication provides a comprehensive and touching tribute to a beloved figure in British sport.
