Crypto Billionaire’s Record £36m Donation Fuels Reform UK

Reform UK has announced a record-breaking political donation of £36 million from British cryptocurrency billionaire Ben Delo. This substantial contribution marks the largest single donation ever received by a political party in the United Kingdom, significantly bolstering the party’s financial resources.

Record Donation and Donor’s Motivation

Ben Delo, a notable figure in the cryptocurrency world, stated his intention behind the massive donation in an article published in The Daily Telegraph. He expressed a desire for a “fair fight and a level playing field” in British politics, suggesting that the current political landscape does not offer equitable competition. Delo’s pledge is structured as £1 million per month until the latest possible date for a general election in 2029. However, he opted to provide the entire sum upfront, anticipating potential government measures to restrict large political donations in the future.

Currently, there are no legal limits on the amount individuals based in the UK can donate to political parties. This contrasts with previous regulations, such as a £100,000 cap on donations from British citizens residing abroad, which was implemented by the Labour Party.

Delo, who was born in Sheffield, has already contributed £4 million to Reform UK. He has indicated his intention to relocate from Hong Kong back to the UK to further support the party’s endeavors. Notably, Delo received an unconditional pardon from U.S. President Donald Trump last year concerning a Bank Secrecy Act violation.

Delo’s Statement on Political Competition

In his public statement, Delo articulated his perspective on the state of British democracy. “Unlike the people who express mock concern for the health of ‘our democracy’ while doing everything they can to keep it as a cartel, I want a fair fight and a level playing field,” he wrote. He further commented on Reform’s recent challenges, suggesting the party should “spend less time trying to raise funds to compete on equal terms and more time preparing for government.”

Reform UK’s Fundraising Under Scrutiny

The significant donation comes at a time when Reform UK’s fundraising activities have been subject to increased scrutiny. The police have launched an investigation into allegations that the party may have violated foreign funding laws, following a report by Channel 4 News. Reform UK has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.

Related Investigations Involving Party Figures

The party leader, Nigel Farage, is also facing an inquiry by the parliamentary standards commissioner. This investigation concerns whether he adequately declared a £5 million cash gift received from Christopher Harborne, a cryptocurrency investor based in Thailand, prior to the 2024 general election after being elected as a Member of Parliament. Farage maintains that the gift was “purely private” and unrelated to his parliamentary or political duties, thus not requiring declaration.

Furthermore, the Metropolitan Police are examining whether payments made to Reform UK in the weeks leading up to the last election adhered to donation regulations. This inquiry includes an examination of donations made directly to the party by Fiona Cottrell, the mother of George Cottrell, a long-standing associate of Nigel Farage. The investigation also covers payments from a company controlled by Reform’s deputy leader, Richard Tice, which reportedly received £1 million from Fiona Cottrell in June 2024.

Political Reactions to the Donation

The substantial donation and the ongoing investigations have drawn sharp reactions from other political parties. Restrictions on donations from British expatriates prompted a strong response from Reform UK and its supporters, who accused the Labour Party of attempting to hinder their party’s progress. The government has also proposed measures, as part of the Representation of the People Bill, to limit donations from individuals moving to the UK from overseas, restricting them to £100,000 for the first year after arrival.

Previously, in the last year, Christopher Harborne made a single donation of £9 million to Reform UK, which at the time was the largest donation from a living individual to a UK political party. While the Conservative Party had received a £10 million legacy donation, Delo’s latest contribution surpasses both these figures.

Opposition Party Responses

A spokesperson for the Labour Party responded critically to the news, stating that Nigel Farage is “still up to his neck in scandal” and that the “questions he faces aren’t going away – in fact they’re piling up.” The spokesperson added, “Reform UK can’t buy their way out of questions about sleaze, criminal mates and dodgy finances.” They urged Farage and Reform UK to “finally come clean with the public, co-operate fully with the police, and proved they’re not just in it for themselves.”

Liberal Democrat spokesperson for the Cabinet Office, Lisa Smart, suggested that Farage aims to “bring Trump’s America to our shores by buying his way into power.” She characterized his ambition as trying to reach Number 10 “as if it’s a stop on a monopoly board.” Smart called for action, stating, “It can’t go on like this. Andy Burnham needs to introduce a cap on political donations. Our democracy depends on it.”

Conclusion

The £36 million donation from Ben Delo represents a significant financial injection for Reform UK, setting a new benchmark for political contributions in the UK. While the party leader expressed gratitude, the unprecedented sum and the ongoing investigations into the party’s finances and the conduct of its figures underscore a period of intense scrutiny and debate surrounding political funding and transparency in the United Kingdom.
