Dietary Supplements: Experts Say Most People Don’t Need Them

In today’s digital landscape, advertisements for dietary supplements are ubiquitous, particularly on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. These platforms, however, are also notorious for spreading misinformation. Nutrition specialist Professor Hans Hauner from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) clarifies when supplements might be beneficial and when they could pose health risks, emphasizing that for the majority of individuals, a balanced diet suffices.

The Allure and Risks of Social Media Supplement Claims

Social media feeds are often flooded with enthusiastic endorsements for dietary supplements, promising a wide range of health benefits. Professor Hauner notes that these claims frequently lack scientific backing. For instance, extensive research has indicated that antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene offer no advantages for cardiovascular health. Furthermore, some commonly promoted supplements can carry significant risks. Omega-3 fatty acids, often found in fish oil supplements, have been linked to an increased risk of atrial fibrillation, while excessive intake of vitamin E may elevate the chances of developing heart failure.

Scientifically Established Benefits of Supplementation

While many supplement claims are unsubstantiated, vitamin supplements are among the most thoroughly researched. However, studies generally reveal no significant health benefits for the general population, and some even point to potential adverse effects, rendering supplementation unnecessary for most. An important exception is vitamin B12, which may be recommended for individuals adhering to vegan or vegetarian diets, but only if blood tests confirm low levels. Evidence for the benefits of mineral and trace element supplements is often limited. Nationwide dietary surveys in Germany indicate that genuine deficiencies in vitamins and minerals are rare, affecting only a small segment of the population. These deficiencies might include iodine, vitamin B12, vitamin D during winter months, or polyunsaturated fatty acids. For most people, a varied and nutritious diet provides adequate levels of these essential nutrients.

The Growing Threat of AI-Generated Misinformation

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) presents a new frontier in social media misinformation, making it increasingly challenging for users to discern authentic content from AI-generated posts, images, videos, or audio. This sophisticated manipulation extends to health and nutrition advice, including recommendations for dietary supplements. Professor Hauner warns that even highly realistic AI-generated content should not be relied upon for health guidance. Users often employ AI without fully understanding its capabilities or inherent risks, including its propensity to fabricate facts, references, and studies. He strongly advises users to be critical of such information and to consult qualified experts.

Questions to Ask Before Buying Supplements

Before purchasing a dietary supplement, especially one endorsed by an influencer, individuals should ask crucial questions. The primary consideration should be: “Could I actually be deficient in this nutrient?” True nutrient deficiencies are uncommon in Germany, typically occurring only under specific circumstances. It is also vital to consider whether one belongs to a vulnerable group, such as individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, pregnant women, or the elderly. Furthermore, consumers should seek out independent scientific assessments of the supplement’s ingredients and verify their sources. Reliable sources for information include the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), the Nutrition Radar platform (supported by EKFZ), and the Klartext Nahrungsergänzung portal from the Verbraucherzentrale. Personalized advice can also be obtained from qualified nutrition professionals.

Regulatory Gaps and Unproven Claims

The regulation of health claims made on social media presents significant gaps. Misleading claims are frequently used to drive sales, often by sponsored influencers who promote products with unproven benefits and fail to disclose potential risks. In Germany, dietary supplements can be placed on the market simply by registering with the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety, without undergoing pre-market evaluation of the products themselves. Professor Hauner advocates for a more robust pre-market review process to ensure compliance with food law and the accuracy of manufacturers’ and distributors’ advertising claims. While social media influencers are legally obligated to disclose sponsorships, enforcement and prosecution for violations are rare.

The Superiority of a Varied Diet Over Supplements

Professor Hauner expresses frustration with the persistent, often unfounded, claims made about supplements, particularly those involving plant extracts like ashwagandha or high-dose beta-carotene, which lack proven benefits and can sometimes cause harm. He champions the message that a natural, varied diet is far more effective than isolated supplements. Nutritional medicine recognizes the significant health advantages of diets like the Mediterranean diet, which can reduce cardiovascular disease risk by approximately 30 percent—an effect unattainable by dietary supplements alone. In conclusion, with modern diets being more nutritionally adequate than ever before, the need for dietary supplements for the general population is minimal.

About the Else Kröner Fresenius Center for Nutritional Medicine (EKFZ)

The center focuses on metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity, while also addressing broader questions in nutritional medicine.
