Artificial intelligence is significantly elevating the importance of data within businesses, yet a substantial majority of organizations are ill-equipped to handle the impending surge in storage demands driven by AI. A recent study reveals that while nearly all companies anticipate a dramatic increase in their storage needs due to AI, a significant portion faces critical infrastructure deficiencies, highlighting storage as a major impediment to AI adoption.

AI’s Growing Impact on Data Value and Storage Needs

The research, which surveyed over 2,700 technology decision-makers, indicates a strong consensus that AI is not only increasing the value of stored information but also driving a massive expansion of storage requirements. A striking 99% of respondents expect AI workloads to necessitate greater storage capacity within the next three years. This expectation is coupled with the observation that 86% of organizations are already experiencing moderate to significant returns on their AI investments, with 33% reporting substantial measurable financial or operational benefits. These returns underscore the critical need for robust data management and storage to support evolving AI models, applications, and decision-making processes.

The anticipated growth in storage needs is considerable, with nearly 7 out of 10 respondents forecasting an increase of at least 26%. A significant subset, 32%, anticipates storage requirements to more than double, exceeding a 50% growth rate. This projected expansion has led 98% of participants to view storage as a strategic component of their IT infrastructure, rather than a mere administrative function.

Infrastructure Readiness Lags Behind AI Ambitions

Despite the clear recognition of AI’s impact and the strategic importance of storage, a significant preparedness gap exists. Only 38% of organizations consider themselves fully ready to meet future storage demands. Alarmingly, 43% of businesses identify inadequate storage infrastructure as one of the primary obstacles hindering their AI deployment efforts. This challenge ranks higher than other critical factors such as compute availability (cited by 27%) and energy constraints (identified by 24%).

Furthermore, data quality and readiness are also cited as major deployment difficulties by 53% of respondents, indicating that the challenges extend beyond sheer capacity to the usability and accessibility of the data itself. The findings suggest that simply increasing computing power will not resolve the infrastructure limitations faced by organizations adopting increasingly data-intensive AI systems.

Sustainability Concerns Reshape Storage Expansion Plans

The expansion of storage infrastructure is increasingly being influenced by sustainability considerations. A substantial 77% of respondents reported that environmental concerns have led to delays or modifications in their planned infrastructure growth. Within this group, 36% experienced major changes to their investments, while another 41% faced smaller postponements due to sustainability factors.

Power consumption emerged as the most frequently considered environmental factor for storage hardware, with 62% of respondents highlighting its importance. The lifespan of equipment was also a key consideration for 55% of participants, who broadly associate longer hardware service periods with improved sustainability in data center operations. Currently, only 39% of organizations describe their storage operations as highly sustainable. However, confidence in future sustainability is higher, with 61% expecting their operations to be highly sustainable within five years.

Financial investment plays a crucial role in achieving sustainability goals. Organizations with annual sustainability budgets exceeding $100 million are significantly more likely to anticipate highly sustainable operations within five years (70%) compared to those with budgets below $1 million (48%).

Interconnected Decisions for Future Storage Architectures

The lifecycle of AI systems presents diverse and demanding infrastructure requirements. Factors such as training material, active datasets, model checkpoints, and retained outputs each impose unique storage needs. As organizations scale their AI operations, these varying demands necessitate a holistic approach to storage architecture. Decisions regarding equipment lifespan, energy consumption, and overall capacity planning are becoming increasingly interconnected.

While the study does not suggest uniform cost increases for all organizations, its findings strongly indicate that widespread anticipation of significant storage growth is a near-certainty. Businesses must therefore proactively address their infrastructure readiness, data quality, and sustainability goals to effectively leverage the increasing value of their data in the age of AI.

Conclusion: Preparing for an AI-Driven Storage Future

The convergence of AI’s increasing data value and the growing demands on storage infrastructure presents a critical juncture for businesses. The study by Seagate underscores that while the potential benefits of AI are widely recognized, the foundational storage capabilities required to support it are often lacking. Addressing the identified gaps in infrastructure readiness, data management, and sustainability planning is paramount. Organizations that strategically invest in and modernize their storage solutions will be best positioned to capitalize on the transformative power of AI, ensuring both operational efficiency and long-term competitive advantage.
