Charles Spencer, the brother of the late Princess Diana, has drawn parallels between the media scrutiny faced by his nephew Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, and the intense press attention that hounded Diana in the years leading up to her tragic death. Spencer advocates for official security for the couple, citing his own experience as Diana’s sibling and the preventable circumstances of her passing.

Echoes of the Past: Security Concerns for Harry and Meghan

Earl Spencer voiced his concerns about the current media landscape surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan, suggesting it mirrors the relentless pursuit that characterized his sister’s final years. Diana died at age 36 in a Paris car crash in 1997, an incident that occurred while she was being pursued by paparazzi on motorbikes. This event triggered widespread grief and a significant public debate about the media’s role and responsibility in sensationalizing her life.

Speaking in anticipation of his new book about Diana, titled “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” Spencer stated, “From a security aspect, as an uncle who’s seen his sister die in very, very preventable circumstances, I would veer towards protection.” He described the tabloid treatment of both Diana and the Sussexes as “beholden on people” to learn from past experiences, emphasizing that it can be “really, really unpleasant.”

Controversial Claims in “Swan Song”

Spencer’s book has already generated considerable attention for its critical portrayal of Diana’s former husband, now King Charles III. The book alleges that the then-Prince of Wales made insensitive remarks in the immediate aftermath of Diana’s death. According to Spencer, Charles sounded “giddily elated” and asserted that the world would soon forget Diana.

In a rare public response, Buckingham Palace issued a statement suggesting that “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.” This statement was interpreted as a rebuttal to Spencer’s claims.

When questioned about the veracity of these alleged conversations, Earl Spencer pointed to a specific line in his eulogy at Diana’s funeral. He included the phrase, “she would ‘never be extinguished from our minds,'” as a deliberate counterpoint to any suggestion that Diana would be forgotten.

A Sister’s Life and Legacy

Spencer explained that he wrote the book, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death, as a way to celebrate her life. He reminisced about their shared childhood, describing it as eventful and noting that both he and Diana likely had undiagnosed ADHD. “She was never diagnosed, but clearly we did,” he remarked.

Challenges for the Royal Family

The publication of Spencer’s book and the recent return of Prince Harry and Meghan to the United Kingdom after six years in California present a complex situation for King Charles III, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment. This period also brings back memories of past accusations from Diana’s family, who claimed a lack of support for the late princess before her death – a sentiment echoed by Harry and Meghan regarding their own experiences before stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

Prince Harry has been vocal about the government’s decision to revoke his family’s automatic police protection, a privilege afforded to other senior royals. This issue has been a subject of ongoing legal challenges and is currently under review.

Earl Spencer, who recently hosted the couple, has seen his book serialized by the Daily Mail, a publication with which Prince Harry has previously engaged in a high-profile privacy lawsuit. Spencer indicated that his revelations about King Charles would likely not surprise Prince Harry or his elder brother, Prince William, and suggested he possesses further details about the King that he chose not to include in the book.

Conclusion: Learning from the Past

The concerns raised by Earl Spencer highlight a recurring theme of intense media scrutiny impacting members of the royal family. His call for enhanced security for Harry and Meghan, rooted in the tragic history of his sister Diana’s experience, serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences when media attention becomes overwhelming. The ongoing discussions surrounding his book and the Sussexes’ public profile underscore the enduring relevance of Diana’s legacy and the complex relationship between the monarchy, the media, and public perception.
