Samsung is reportedly planning to integrate security chips into the batteries of its Galaxy smartphones, a move that could significantly enhance safety and combat the proliferation of counterfeit replacement parts. The initiative is expected to begin next year, with an initial rollout targeting approximately 50 million devices, primarily within the popular Galaxy A series, which represents a substantial portion of Samsung’s smartphone sales.

Enhancing Safety and Authenticity

The introduction of these security chips would mark a significant first for Samsung’s smartphone battery technology. According to industry sources, the chips are designed to authenticate genuine Samsung batteries, distinguishing them from potentially substandard or dangerous third-party replacements. This measure aims to address a growing concern where non-genuine batteries can compromise device performance, lead to malfunctions, and, in the worst-case scenarios, pose fire hazards during charging or use.

The technology behind these chips is said to involve Samsung Electronics’ 28-nanometer foundry process, utilizing VIA PUF (physical unclonable function) technology. This method creates a unique, unforgeable identity for each chip, making it exceptionally difficult to replicate. The manufacturing and supply of these authentication chips are anticipated to be shared between Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) in the U.S. and ICTK in South Korea.

Addressing the Counterfeit Market

While official Samsung repair services ensure the use of authentic components, many consumers opt for third-party repair options due to convenience and cost savings. However, the quality and safety standards of these aftermarket batteries can vary widely, sometimes failing to meet the rigorous specifications of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. The embedded security chips would provide a clear mechanism for devices to verify the legitimacy of the battery installed, thereby safeguarding users from potential risks associated with counterfeit or poorly manufactured components.

Sustainability Benefits

Beyond safety and authenticity, the new security chips are also expected to contribute to more efficient and effective battery recycling processes. By allowing repairers and recyclers to easily access and review the usage history and condition of individual batteries, the chips can facilitate a more customized approach to lithium recycling. Instead of treating all batteries uniformly, recyclers can tailor their methods based on the specific characteristics and degradation levels of each unit, potentially improving resource recovery and reducing environmental impact.

Regulatory Landscape and Industry Trends

This reported move by Samsung aligns with broader industry trends and evolving regulatory requirements, particularly in Europe. While Samsung has not officially commented, the timing of this potential implementation, starting next year, could be a proactive response to upcoming EU regulations. As of February 2027, the EU is set to mandate ‘readily removable’ batteries in phones. Furthermore, the EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542, effective from February 2027, requires digital battery passports for industrial and electric vehicle batteries. Although this regulation currently does not directly apply to smartphones, Samsung’s adoption of authentication chips may be seen as an early preparation for potential future legislation extending to mobile devices.

A Competitive Shift

Samsung’s potential entry into battery authentication technology places it in line with competitors like Apple, which began integrating similar chips into its iPhones as early as 2018 with the launch of the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR models. For Samsung, this would represent a significant technological advancement in its smartphone battery management and security, a feature that has been anticipated by some observers for some time.

As Samsung has yet to officially confirm these plans, the industry will be watching closely for further announcements. Should these reports prove accurate, the integration of security chips into Galaxy phone batteries could set a new standard for device safety, authenticity, and sustainability in the mobile technology sector.
