MANILA, Philippines – Siquijor’s latest and largest marine protected space (MPA) can now be present in Barangay Bitaug within the city of Enrique Villanueva. It was formally launched because the island’s twenty third sanctuary on June 20, with a complete space of 149.46 hectares.
Distinctive species of marine life, like lato (nudibranch), barracuda, feather stars, coral, and mandarin fish, could be sighted beneath the waves. Siquijor’s largest mangrove forest, the place sea turtles could be discovered, can be beside the MPA.
It took 18 years for the MPA to be established, by means of the efforts of the native fisherfolk affiliation and the assistance of a number of companions in authorities, the academe, and non-government organizations.
