WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened Canada with a 50% tariff on any plane bought within the U.S., the most recent salvo in his commerce struggle with America’s northern neighbor as his feud with Prime Minister Mark Carney expands.
Trump’s menace posted on social media got here after he threatened over the weekend to impose a 100% tariff on items imported from Canada if it went ahead with a deliberate commerce cope with China. However Trump’s menace didn’t include any particulars about when he would impose the import taxes, as Canada had already struck a deal.
In Trump’s newest menace, the Republican president stated he was retaliating in opposition to Canada for refusing to certify jets from Savannah, Georgia-based Gulfstream Aerospace.
Trump stated the U.S., in return, would decertify all Canadian plane, together with planes from its largest plane maker, Bombardier. “If, for any motive, this example shouldn’t be instantly corrected, I’m going to cost Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Plane bought into the USA of America,” Trump stated in his submit.
Spokespeople for Bombardier and Canada’s transport minister didn’t instantly reply to messages searching for remark Thursday night.
