Apple continues to face challenges in retaining top AI talent, with several researchers departing for competitors like Meta and Google DeepMind. This latest wave of exits highlights ongoing shifts within the company’s artificial intelligence efforts.
Senior Siri Leader Departs for Google
Stuart Bowers, a high-ranking executive overseeing Siri development, has joined Google DeepMind. Bowers previously reported to Siri head Mike Rockwell, and his responsibilities expanded significantly last year. He also contributed to Apple’s discontinued autonomous vehicle initiative.
The move carries notable irony, as Bowers now contributes to Google’s Gemini models, which power Apple’s forthcoming enhancements to Siri.
Broader Reorganizations in AI Division
Apple’s AI and Siri teams have undergone substantial restructuring over the past year. In December, John Giannandrea relinquished his position as Senior Vice President of Machine Learning and AI Strategy. He remains in an advisory role through spring 2026 before retiring fully.
These changes come as Apple integrates advanced AI features across its ecosystem, including partnerships with external models to bolster Siri capabilities.
