Hearts manager Derek McInnes has shared details of a phone call from Celtic first-team coach Mark Fotheringham, who apologized for an incident during last Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Tynecastle.

Tensions rose after Benjamin Nygren scored the opening goal for Hearts. McInnes reacted strongly to the celebrations from the Celtic bench, particularly from Fotheringham, a former Huddersfield boss. McInnes entered the visitors’ technical area, expressing his frustration over what he viewed as excessive behavior.

Details of the Confrontation

McInnes explained his annoyance stemmed from the unexpected reaction on the away bench. ‘I’ve faced many dugouts over the years, including Celtic teams, and this one surprised me,’ he stated. ‘I thought it was out of order.’ He described Fotheringham as an inexperienced coach who got carried away in the moment.

Fotheringham’s Apology and Moving Forward

Fotheringham contacted McInnes on Monday afternoon to offer his regrets. ‘He said there was no offense intended, and if any was taken, he was sorry,’ McInnes recounted. ‘That speaks volumes about his character. We’re putting it behind us.’

McInnes noted he does not know Fotheringham well personally but has heard positive accounts from mutual contacts, describing him as a ‘great lad.’

Focus Shifts to Dundee United Match

Hearts now prepare for their clash with Dundee United at Tannadice on Saturday evening. A win could extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points ahead of rivals Rangers and Celtic, who play the following day.

The team welcomes Uganda forward Rogers Mato, their fourth January signing, who may debut in the match. McInnes remains keen to bolster the attack with another striker before the transfer window closes next week but admits it appears unlikely at present.

‘We’ve pursued a few options and hit some barriers,’ McInnes said. ‘The club continues to explore possibilities, but realistically, we’re content with the four additions we’ve made. We won’t stop trying, though.’

McInnes dismissed ideas that a victory would intensify pressure on the Old Firm duo. ‘It’s simply another opportunity to secure points and demonstrate our consistency,’ he emphasized. ‘Our priority is selecting the right lineup and delivering a strong performance.’
