Michael Carrick aims to retain Marcus Rashford at Manchester United if he secures the permanent managerial role. The forward has excelled during his loan at Barcelona, netting nine goals and providing 12 assists this season, including a stunning free-kick in the Champions League against Copenhagen.
Rashford Thrives in Catalonia
Rashford appears content in Spain, with indications that Barcelona intends to trigger his £26 million buy clause in the summer if finances allow. The club currently leads La Liga and has advanced to the Champions League last 16, offering Rashford a platform to achieve major honors.
In an October interview with ESPN, Rashford expressed enthusiasm for a permanent stay: “Oh yeah, for sure. I’m enjoying this football club and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game. For a player it is an honor.”
He has formed a strong on-pitch connection with young star Lamine Yamal. Rashford shared with ESPN: “I knew he was good before I played with him. But to play with him every day is unbelievable. Relationships on the pitch, the ones I am still learning, are very important. When it comes to the matchday, these are things which make small differences.”
Settling into Barcelona Life
Initially based at the luxurious Gran Melia Torre Melina hotel, Rashford has since relocated to an apartment in the upscale Esplugues de Llobregat district, nestled against the Collserola mountains. This area has housed notable Barcelona alumni like Gerard Pique and Andres Iniesta.
Outside of training, Rashford pursues interests such as padel and fishing while savoring local Mediterranean dishes. He highlighted in a BBC interview: “I’d probably say paella is my favorite.”
The 28-year-old has also brought his Cane Corso dog, Saint, to Spain and hosted friends and family, fostering a sense of belonging. Speaking to the BBC in December, he said: “It’s been amazing. I feel welcome, I feel at home. I’ve just been enjoying every step of the way. Learning the language and stuff like that, learning the culture, it’s all enjoyable for me. It’s something I wanted to do for a long time and this is the perfect opportunity. I’m understanding more now, and the speaking side of it, it’s more just confidence to do it in front of a group.”
Rashford celebrated his first trophy with Barcelona by winning the Spanish Super Cup.
Carrick’s Admiration and United’s Challenge
Carrick, who debuted Rashford under Louis van Gaal in 2016 during their time as teammates, holds the forward in high regard. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has praised Rashford’s contributions, noting his mentality at the “best level” and adding: “Speed, finishing, control. He has amazing quality, really.”
Although former United manager Ruben Amorim had sidelined Rashford, Carrick’s potential appointment could reignite discussions. With Rashford’s contract at Old Trafford running until 2028, convincing him to return may prove difficult amid his resurgence in Catalonia.
