Parents of Convicted Nurse Denounce Upcoming Documentary

The parents of Lucy Letby, the former nurse convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others, have publicly condemned an upcoming Netflix documentary as a severe violation of their privacy. Susan and John Letby spoke out for the first time since their daughter’s life sentence in August 2023, expressing outrage over police footage featured in the program that shows her arrest at their home.

The documentary, set for release this week, includes unreleased clips of Letby’s arrests, highlighting moments that the family describes as deeply personal and intrusive. The Letbys stated that viewing the film would be unbearable, saying it ‘would likely kill us if we did.’

Concerns Over Investigation and Footage Release

In their statement, the Letbys questioned the decision to publicize the arrest footage, particularly involving Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes, the lead investigator. They noted full cooperation with authorities throughout the process and expressed disbelief at the officer’s apparent ‘deep hatred’ toward them.

The couple recalled the shock of the arrests, emphasizing that they had no forewarning. ‘We’ve always imagined that if something life-changing is going to happen to you the next day, you would somehow have a premonition that something was about to happen,’ they said. ‘We can honestly say that on the eve of all three of the arrests we had absolutely no idea they were coming.’

A trailer for the documentary depicts officers entering the family’s Hereford home in June 2019, where Letby was staying. She appears confused in bed, wearing pajamas, as police announce her arrest on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. She is then escorted away in her dressing gown.

Background on Letby’s Conviction and Ongoing Doubts

Letby, 36, was convicted for crimes committed at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. The case relied on statistical evidence and theories about harm inflicted on the infants, without forensic or CCTV proof or a clear motive. Experts have raised significant concerns over the prosecution’s approach, including contradictions in the testimony of key witness Dr. Dewi Evans.

Recent analysis points to flaws in the original trial, such as contested probabilities and disputed medical theories. In 2024, Cheshire Constabulary submitted additional evidence to prosecutors regarding eight attempted murders and one murder, but the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed no further charges will be filed. Letby’s defense argues this decision underscores weaknesses in the initial convictions.

The Letbys had proactively informed police in March 2017 about hospital doctors Stephen Brearey and Ravi Jayaram, suggesting their daughter was being scapegoated amid challenges in neonatal care at the facility.

Calls for Case Review

The case is currently under review by the Criminal Cases Review Commission. Dame Esther Rantzen, a prominent broadcaster, has urged a thorough re-examination, citing the need to ensure justice. As doubts persist among medical and legal experts, the Letby family’s public statement adds to the growing scrutiny of the high-profile prosecution.
