Cher’s Chaotic Grammys Return: Forgets Nominees and Mixes Up Winner

Cher made a memorable yet mishap-filled return to the Grammys after an 18-year absence, accepting a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 ceremony. The 79-year-old pop icon, known as the Goddess of Pop, captivated the audience with her speech but encountered several awkward moments during the event.

Cher’s Acceptance and On-Stage Confusion

During her acceptance speech, Cher shared insights on perseverance in the entertainment industry. She reflected on her early ambitions, stating, ‘I knew what I wanted to be when I was five years old, and I was famous at 19, and had a top-rated show in my twenties.’ She acknowledged the challenges of her career, adding, ‘But it didn’t occur to me how rough my career was going to be and my life was going to be. And I’m not saying, “Oh, poor me”, but whatever. I was either a loser or winning an Oscar.’

Cher emphasized resilience, telling the crowd, ‘The thing I want to tell you, the only thing I wanted you to take away with you… Never give up on your dream, no matter what happens. Live it, be it, and if it’s not happening now, it will happen soon. So that’s all I have to say. Thank you.’

Tasked with announcing the Record of the Year nominees after her speech, Cher appeared disoriented. She urged the audience to ‘sit down, please,’ then admitted, ‘I don’t do this part very well. I mean, put a microphone in my hand, have some music, I’m great!’ Looking nervous, she declared, ‘I guess I’m supposed to walk off now. Alright!’ as she began exiting the stage.

Host Intervention and Continued Mishaps

Host Trevor Noah quickly intervened, rushing onstage to remind her. ‘Before you go, before you go, Cher! Before you go, could we get you to announce the nominees? I could do it, but it’s not the same,’ Noah said. A crew member guided Cher back to center stage, and Noah welcomed her return to cheers.

Approaching the microphone again, Cher quipped, ‘You can see I wanted to get off the stage.’ She then listed the nominees smoothly. However, holding the winner’s envelope, she paused, glanced at the camera, and exclaimed, ‘Oh, they told me it was going to be on the prompter!’ Laughing, she announced the winner as the collaboration between Kendrick Lamar and SZA titled ‘Luther.’

In a mix-up, Cher initially pronounced it as ‘Luther Vandross’—misstating it as ‘Grandoss’—referring to the late singer whose track ‘If This World Were Mine’ was sampled in the song. She quickly corrected herself, shouting, ‘No, Kendrick Lamar. The Grammy goes to Kendrick Lamar!’ Lamar, laughing, accepted the award onstage.

Reactions and Lamar’s Tribute

The incidents sparked amusement among viewers. Social media users highlighted the chaos, with one posting, ‘The pause, the name mix-up, the absolute chaos—only Cher could accidentally turn a Record of the Year announcement into camp television history.’ Another noted, ‘She was so lost I’m crying,’ while a third called it ‘the funniest fucking thing I’ve ever seen.’ Some urged empathy, stating, ‘She’s almost 80, let’s give her some grace.’

In his acceptance speech, Kendrick Lamar honored Luther Vandross, who passed away in 2005. ‘First and foremost, let’s give a shout-out to the late, great, Luther Vandross. It was very, very important to keep the integrity of this record,’ Lamar said.

Noah later remarked on the excitement, declaring, ‘I love live television!’

Technical Glitches During Alex Warren’s Performance

The ceremony faced another hiccup during Best New Artist nominee Alex Warren’s performance of ‘Ordinary.’ The 25-year-old singer navigated technical difficulties with his in-ear monitor as he walked through the crowd to the stage. Struggling with the device and its earpieces, which kept falling out, Warren fell slightly off-beat during the chorus but recovered swiftly.

He continued with the performance, rising above the audience on a mechanical lift. Afterward, Warren removed the earpiece. Addressing the issue on social media, he shared a video of the distorted audio, captioning it, ‘This would only happen to me. When you’re performing at the Grammys and all you hear is this in your ears.’
