Unexpected Supergroup Sparks Historic Band Reunion

What began as a passion project between Chicago musician Jason Narducy and Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon culminated in a historic moment for alternative rock. On February 28, 2025, all four original members of R.E.M. reunited onstage for the first time in 17 years, joining Narducy and Shannon’s tribute collective during a performance at Athens, Georgia’s 40 Watt Club.

The impromptu collaboration occurred during a rendition of ‘Pretty Persuasion,’ marking a surreal milestone for the tribute act. “Having their endorsement means everything,” Narducy recalled during a recent interview. “When Michael Stipe asked to join us in Brooklyn weeks later, I couldn’t believe it. How many iconic bands stay this connected and open-hearted?”

From Chicago Bars to National Stages

The unlikely partnership began in 2014 when mutual friend Robbie Fulks invited both to perform Lou Reed’s ‘The Blue Mask’ at Chicago’s Hideout venue. After Fulks relocated, Shannon proposed expanding their collaboration into themed album performances. Their 2016 debut featured The Smiths’ ‘The Queen Is Dead,’ followed by tributes to Bob Dylan, Modern Lovers, and Neil Young.

“Initially, it was a niche local project,” Narducy explained. “Our eclectic choices didn’t always fill venues. That changed dramatically when we commemorated R.E.M.’s ‘Murmur’ anniversary in 2023.” The Metro Chicago show sold out immediately, triggering promoter interest nationwide and European tour dates.

Musical Chemistry and Creative Approach

When recreating R.E.M.’s catalog, the collective balances authenticity with personal interpretation. “We study recordings meticulously but bring our own experiences,” Narducy noted. “Michael Shannon doesn’t imitate Stipe’s vocals—he honors the spirit while making it his own.”

Gear choices reflect this philosophy: Narducy plays a Telecaster reminiscent of Buck’s early setup, while guitarist Dag Juhlin uses a Rickenbacker. Their amplifier selections—Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and Vox AC30—create distinct tonal layers rather than direct replication.

Future Plans and Lasting Impacts

The project’s success continues with scheduled 2026 dates celebrating ‘Lifes Rich Pageant’s’ 40th anniversary, though scheduling proves challenging. Shannon balances acting commitments with performances, while Narducy maintains multiple musical roles including bassist for Bob Mould and Superchunk.

Reflecting on R.E.M.’s influence, Narducy shared: “Their 1987 ‘Document’ album transformed me. They bridged punk ethos with melodic sophistication—Peter Buck’s inventive guitar work especially resonated with my approach to songwriting.”

Beyond Tribute: Ongoing Musical Endeavors

While the R.E.M. project thrives, Narducy continues diverse creative work: intimate solo tours, developing a new musical theater production, and performing with alternative rock pioneers. “Collaborating with artists I admire makes every project fulfilling,” he stated. “Whether playing living rooms or theaters, connecting through music remains the priority.”

The tribute collective’s journey underscores music’s connective power—from chance encounters to reviving rock history, demonstrating how artistic passion can forge unexpected bonds and create cultural moments.
