Calls Grow for Inflation-Adjusted DWP Holiday Payment
Over 10,000 citizens have endorsed a parliamentary petition demanding the UK government update its decades-old Christmas Bonus program to reflect modern living costs. The longstanding £10 tax-free payment, distributed annually since 1972 to state pensioners and benefit recipients, faces scrutiny for failing to keep pace with inflation.
Historical Payment Loses 90% of Value
The petition organizer contends the payment’s purchasing power has eroded dramatically, with inflation calculations suggesting the 1972 sum would equate to approximately £171 today. “In the 1970s, £10 provided meaningful assistance for heating, groceries or children’s gifts during the holidays,” the petition states. “Today this amount won’t cover a family’s Christmas dinner or basic festivities – it’s frankly insulting.”
Eligibility Requirements and Current Reach
The Department for Work and Pensions currently issues the payment to approximately 15 million qualifying individuals during the first week of December. Recipients must be receiving at least one of 24 specified benefits including State Pension, Personal Independence Payment, or Carer’s Allowance, while demonstrating UK residency during the qualifying period.
Notably, 8.3 million Universal Credit claimants remain ineligible for the bonus under current rules. The petition specifically proposes limiting the revised payment to British citizens who’ve received benefits for at least six consecutive months.
Fiscal Implications and Government Response
With nearly 24 million Britons receiving state benefits, upgrading the payment to £171 would increase government expenditure from the current £150 million to approximately £2.5 billion annually. The petition has crossed the 10,000-signature threshold requiring an official government response, though no timetable has been established for parliamentary debate.
Officials confirm recipients must actively claim State Pension or qualifying benefits during the assessment period to receive the bonus. Those eligible typically see payments automatically deposited in early December without requiring application.
