Comedian Renews Criticism of Awards Show Activism

Ricky Gervais has reignited his longstanding criticism of celebrities using awards ceremonies as political platforms following recent remarks made at the Grammy Awards. During the February 2 event in Los Angeles, multiple winners including Bad Bunny and Billie Eilish delivered speeches condemning current U.S. immigration policies.

‘They’re Still Not Listening’

Gervais responded to the developments through social media, sharing a segment from his controversial 2020 Golden Globes monologue where he advised winners: “If you do win an award, don’t use it as a political platform. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world.” The comedian added the caption: “They’re still not listening.”

The viral 2020 speech featured additional blunt advice to attendees: “Come up, accept your little award, thank your agent, and your God and f*** off. It’s already three hours long.”

Artists Take Stand Against Immigration Policies

Several Grammy participants wore “ICE Out” pins in apparent protest of current immigration enforcement measures. During his acceptance speech for Best Música Urbana Album, Bad Bunny received a standing ovation after declaring: “Before I say thanks to God, I’m gonna say ICE out.”

The Puerto Rican artist continued: “We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans. The only thing that is more powerful than hate is love.”

Billie Eilish made similar remarks while accepting Song of the Year, stating: “No one is illegal on stolen land” before concluding with an expletive directed at ICE. Singer Kehlani echoed these sentiments during red carpet interviews, criticizing current immigration policies.

Conservative Backlash Emerges

The political statements drew swift criticism from conservative commentators. Political analyst Tomi Lahren responded on social media: “Overpaid musicians and celebrities say ‘F*** ICE’ while the hardworking men and women of ICE and border patrol are removing public safety threats.”

The Grammy protests occurred amid ongoing national debates about immigration enforcement and border security policies. Bad Bunny’s upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance has reportedly drawn criticism from some conservative groups.

Other artists including Justin Vernon of Bon Iver participated in symbolic gestures, with Vernon telling media he wore a whistle to honor those documenting immigration enforcement activities.
