Washington — White Home border czar Tom Homan mentioned that whereas he would not like that federal immigration enforcement officers brokers put on masks, he believes they should put on masks to guard themselves towards threats and violence.

“I do not just like the masks both,” Homan mentioned in an interview with Ed O’Keefe on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on Sunday.

Homan mentioned assaults towards Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have elevated by 1,500% whereas threats towards them have elevated by 8,000%. The Division of Homeland Safety mentioned in a Jan. 26 information launch that assaults towards ICE officers had elevated by greater than 1,300%. Neither Homan nor the discharge gave a timeframe for that surge, nor did they provide a supply for the assault and menace claims.

“These women and men have to guard themselves,” he mentioned.

A partial authorities shutdown centered on DHS started early Saturday as congressional Democrats and the White Home stay at odds on reforms to how ICE and Customs and Border Safety perform immigration enforcement. Their conduct has been more and more scrutinized since federal brokers fatally shot Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota in January.

Congress left city Thursday with none settlement on DHS funding and lawmakers aren’t anticipated to return till Feb. 23.

Requiring immigration brokers to put on physique cameras and identification, banning them from sporting masks, stopping racial profiling and mandating judicial warrants for arrests on non-public property are amongst Democrats’ calls for.

Homan, who mentioned he’s not aside of negotiations on DHS funding, referred to as a few of Democrats’ calls for “unreasonable.”

“They wish to say, cease racial profiling. That is simply not occurring. ICE will detain, briefly detain and query, however query any person based mostly on cheap suspicion. It has nothing to do with racial profiling.” Homan mentioned. “There isn’t a racial profiling.”

On acquiring judicial warrants, Homan mentioned, “that is not what the federal regulation requires.”

“If Congress desires that change, then Congress can legislate. However proper now, ICE is performing throughout the framework of federal statutes enacted by Congress and signed by a president,” he mentioned.
