Bangkok metropolitan police officers assembled an undercover operation in under 24 hours, posing as lion dance performers at a bustling Lunar New Year temple fair. Their target: a slippery thief with a track record of dodging capture.

Police Captain Lertvarit Lertvorapreecha described the performance as impromptu, with no rehearsal time. In the rush, he donned a colleague’s male mask paired with a red silk dress, trousers, and tactical shoes. The ruse paid off—children flocked to join the fun, onlookers chuckled, and officers ambushed the suspect, tackling him amid swirling red and gold cloth. He now sits in prison awaiting trial on charges of stealing Buddhist artifacts valued at £47,717.

Innovative Disguise Strategies

Captain Lertvarit’s team routinely employs creative disguises, such as foliage suits, construction worker outfits, and even Lycra wrestling gear, to outmaneuver suspects. Videos of these stings frequently go viral, drawing global attention.

“You cannot hide from the invisible, or from what you cannot see,” Captain Lertvarit stated. “The fastest way to arrest someone is to surprise them when they’re enjoying life, unaware of what’s happening around them.”

These approaches stem from on-the-ground fieldwork and criminal profiling. For the lion dance, officers knew the suspect had relocated and that festival crowds provided ideal cover to blend in seamlessly.

The professional thief stayed hyper-vigilant, fleeing at the slightest suspicion and excelling as a runner, Captain Lertvarit noted. Officers found him armed with a knife at arrest, and he later confessed to multiple robberies.

Tackling Serious Offenses

Disguises prove effective against perpetrators of grave crimes, including rape and child sexual assaults.

In one operation, an officer crawled hundreds of meters through rice fields in a ghillie camouflage suit—shedding headphones en route—to capture a fugitive accused of assaulting a minor. The suspect hid in a remote field hut, where vehicles or bikes would have alerted him instantly.

That same month in 2024, another officer dressed as a wrestler lured a Chinese tourist charged with rape and secretly filming his victim. Posing for a hotel rendezvous the suspect requested, the undercover agent uttered a code word. Backup then surged from wardrobes, the bathroom, balcony, and beneath the bed, confiscating key evidence like incriminating videos from the man’s phone. He initially denied the allegations.

Public Trust and Mission

Authorities dismiss claims that these tactics prioritize social media buzz, stressing they yield genuine captures of seasoned fugitives. Community feedback remains predominantly supportive.

Surveys reveal divided public views on Thai police, with strong confidence in some areas offset by corruption worries. Captain Lertvarit aims for shared operation footage to highlight dedication to public safety, underscoring to criminals that “the world is getting smaller every day.”
