Apple has refreshed its entry-level iPhone lineup just one year after introducing the iPhone 16e, launching the iPhone 17e with significant enhancements. This update delivers five standout improvements, making it a compelling upgrade for budget-conscious users.
Five Key Upgrades in the iPhone 17e
Apple highlights five major advancements from the 2025 iPhone 16e to the 2026 iPhone 17e.
1. Enhanced Performance with A19 Chip
The iPhone 17e features Apple’s A19 chip, the same processor powering the iPhone 17. While it retains a 4-core GPU like the A18 in the iPhone 16e, the A19 includes Neural Accelerators in each GPU core, delivering superior AI capabilities and overall faster performance.
2. Faster Connectivity via C1X Modem
Upgrading from the C1 modem, the iPhone 17e adopts the new C1X modem, which provides up to twice the cellular speeds compared to the iPhone 16e.
3. Advanced Camera for Portraits
The camera system now supports next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. It automatically detects people, dogs, and cats, captures depth data, and enables post-shot adjustments like background blur or focus shifts directly in the Photos app.
4. Improved Durability with Ceramic Shield 2
As part of the iPhone 17 series, the iPhone 17e uses Ceramic Shield 2 front glass, offering three times better scratch resistance and reduced glare through enhanced anti-reflection properties over the iPhone 16e.
5. MagSafe and Faster Wireless Charging
MagSafe support arrives on the iPhone 17e, enabling seamless use with accessories like stands, wallets, and battery packs. Wireless charging speed doubles to 15W with a 20W adapter or higher, up from 7.5W on the iPhone 16e. It also adds Qi2 compatibility beyond standard Qi.
Storage Boost Without Price Hike
The iPhone 17e starts at 256GB for $599, doubling the iPhone 16e’s base 128GB at the same price. The 512GB option drops to $799 from $899. This represents a fourfold storage increase over the iPhone 12’s base model, enhancing value for upgraders.
Design Tweaks and Color Options
Both models share a 6.1-inch display with a notch design, premium matte finish in black or white, and similar dimensions. The iPhone 17e introduces a soft pink color and weighs slightly more at 169 grams versus 167 grams for the iPhone 16e.
What Stays the Same
The starting price holds at $599, matching last year’s increase from the iPhone SE. Maximum storage remains 512GB, the screen size and notch persist without Dynamic Island, and connectivity specs like 5G sub-6 GHz with 4×4 MIMO, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.3 are unchanged. Battery life offers up to 26 hours of video playback and 50% charge in 30 minutes via USB-C with a 20W adapter.
While the iPhone 17e competes closely with the pricier iPhone 17, it outperforms the iPhone 16e in value, particularly with doubled storage and MagSafe. Expect iPhone 16e prices to fall by at least $100 in stores.
