Flood Warning Details

The Grand River Conservation Authority activated the warning on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The broader Grand River watershed—from Dundalk in the north to Lake Erie in the south, encompassing Waterloo region, Guelph, and Wellington County—remains under a flood watch.

Weather and Water Conditions

Air temperatures will stay above freezing through Wednesday. The region received 15 to 30 mm of rain from Friday through Saturday afternoon. Northern snowpack holds substantial water content, and the combination of warm weather and intermittent heavy rain drives snowmelt and heightened runoff.

Risk Levels and Safety Concerns

Ayr, New Hamburg, and West Montrose currently face a level one flood risk, with New Hamburg and Ayr potentially advancing to level two on Sunday. Ice persists on several rivers, including the Grand River, raising the possibility of ice jams.

High river flows and unstable ice heighten dangers near waterways. Officials urge the public to use extreme caution around rivers and streams throughout the watershed.

Local Alerts and Forecast

Wilmot Township notified New Hamburg residents of the warning, recommending close monitoring of conditions over the weekend. Waterloo region, Guelph, and Wellington County experienced a yellow weather warning for rain on Saturday. Expect rain and possible thunderstorms Saturday night, followed by potential snow and freezing drizzle early Sunday morning.
