Unexpected Discovery in Hidden Depths
Urban explorers venturing into the depths of Middleton Mine in the Derbyshire Dales stumbled upon a remarkable sight: a forgotten film set buried underground. Two anonymous adventurers uncovered the site, which features a vintage blue and white American bus, a constructed stage, a car lift, a caravan, and detailed lighting plans.
Officials believe this setup served as a filming location for the 2025 Marvel hit The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the action thriller Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The explorers gained insights from two individuals who assisted the production crew and actors on these projects.
Explorers’ Account of the Find
One explorer described the moment of discovery: “I usually seek out interesting artifacts, but discovering a film set was entirely new to me.”
They continued, “As we moved forward with our torches, we entered a developed area featuring an old American bus parked prominently. Lighting rigs stood on scaffolding, accompanied by a map outlining the precise positions for the lights.”
The scene included an elevator car positioned oddly in the middle of a roadway and a stage set before the bus. Additional equipment, such as machinery for setup, a cabin equipped with a microwave and kettle, and pipes designed to maintain air quality against radon gas risks, added to the intrigue.
“It was quite an experience to witness the film set—it far exceeded our expectations,” the explorer added. “We understand that productions like Lord of the Rings and Mission: Impossible have also utilized this location in the past.”
Spotlight on The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Released in 2025, The Fantastic Four: First Steps stars Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic. The film grossed $521.9 million worldwide and received favorable audience feedback.
Ambient in the 1960s era, the narrative follows Mister Fantastic and his superhero family as they navigate their heroic duties alongside family ties. They confront threats from the cosmic entity Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer, to protect Earth.
The ensemble cast includes Vanessa Kirby as the Invisible Woman, Mister Fantastic’s partner; Joseph Quinn as the Human Torch; and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing. This installment represents Marvel’s third cinematic adaptation of the superhero team, succeeding earlier versions from 2005, 2007, and a 2015 reboot.
Representatives from Disney have not commented on the recent findings surrounding the abandoned set.
