Arne Slot faces intense scrutiny at Liverpool following a challenging season in both the Premier League and Champions League. Just one year ago, the team secured the Premier League title with seven matches remaining, but now struggles persist, putting the Dutch manager’s position under threat.
Premier League Title Defense Falters
Liverpool’s bid to retain their Premier League crown has faltered significantly under Slot’s guidance. The team now confronts a critical situation in Europe, teetering on the edge of a Champions League quarter-final exit after a 2-0 defeat to PSG in the first leg. They must overcome this deficit at Anfield in the return fixture to advance.
Private Focus on Champions League
Slot privately emphasized prioritizing the Champions League campaign as early as January. This strategy now risks backfiring if Liverpool fails to progress, potentially intensifying calls for change. The manager must rally his squad for a pivotal comeback against PSG, as a poor finish to the season could jeopardize his tenure.
Xabi Alonso Emerges as Potential Replacement
Speculation grows around Xabi Alonso as a possible successor should Liverpool opt for a managerial shift. However, Liverpool legend John Barnes cautions against hasty decisions.
Barnes stated: “I understand the clamour because Xabi is a Liverpool favourite, but did he not fail at Real Madrid? Was he actually a successful manager? Of course, don’t get me wrong, I think Xabi is great and he did a good job, but he got sacked by Real Madrid for failure, didn’t he? That’s why they got rid of him.”
He continued: “We do like the clamour for ex-players. Steven Gerrard’s been mentioned before, so I understand the way fans are, but this is the way fans are. They’re very fickle. We won the league with Arne Slot and all of a sudden we want to sack him? If he then goes and Alonso comes, suppose Alonso fails in his first six months or first year, are we going to sack him and bring somebody else in? I always support the managers, whoever they are, because they come to the club because of their success, because they’re good managers and they have to be given time.”
