More than 1.1 million individuals over State Pension age in the UK remain unaware of or unclaimed for Attendance Allowance, a key benefit from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) that provides up to £5,704 annually to support those requiring daily assistance due to illness or disability.

Who Qualifies for Attendance Allowance?

Eligibility applies to anyone who has reached State Pension age—typically 66 or older—and faces a long-term physical or mental condition necessitating help with personal care or supervision for safety. Claimants must have required such support for at least six months prior to applying, though terminally ill individuals face simplified rules without the waiting period.

Additional requirements include meeting UK residence and presence tests. Personal care encompasses assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, using the toilet, eating, communicating, or mobility tasks such as getting in and out of bed or chairs. Supervision might involve prompting for medication or ensuring safety during routine activities.

Current and Upcoming Benefit Rates

The higher rate currently stands at £110.40 per week, equating to £5,740 annually, for those needing help both day and night or living with a terminal illness. The lower rate is £72.65 weekly, or £3,778 yearly, for daytime or nighttime support only.

Starting April 2026, these amounts will rise: the lower rate to £76.70 per week (£3,988 yearly) and the higher rate to £114.60 per week (£5,959 yearly), reflecting adjustments to match living costs.

Common Scenarios for Claiming Support

Many overlook this benefit if their needs align with everyday challenges from conditions like arthritis, which may require aid in moving, washing, or dressing. Deaf individuals might qualify for interpretation services during communication or public announcements. Those with mental health conditions could need reminders for self-care, including meals and hygiene.

Visually impaired people often benefit from help selecting clothing, safely operating appliances, or preparing meals. Individuals with learning difficulties may receive assistance managing finances, correspondence, or personal health maintenance.

Applying for Attendance Allowance can significantly ease financial pressures for eligible pensioners, covering care costs without means-testing. Interested parties should contact the DWP to assess their situation and initiate a claim.
