Australian amateur boxer Robin Faumuina faces conspiracy to murder charges in an alleged plot to assassinate Sydney underworld figure Ayman Tamer. Authorities claim the scheme involved a guns-for-hire network with surveillance, staged vehicles, getaway drivers, and coordinated efforts targeting Sydney’s west.
Investigation Sparks from High-Speed Chase
The probe began on September 26 last year when officers spotted a BMW with cloned plates near Bankstown Police Station. The driver fled during a stop attempt, leading to a pursuit that police later abandoned. Authorities found the abandoned vehicle 40 minutes later and discovered a loaded handgun on a nearby street. Investigators believe the occupants headed to execute the hit.
Detective Superintendent Jason Box highlighted the plot’s severity: “The level of violence on this occasion was extreme, he was going to be murdered.” Police allege further unsuccessful attempts followed in subsequent months.
Raids Lead to Key Arrests
After a six-month operation by Taskforce Falcon, coordinated raids across Sydney on Thursday resulted in multiple arrests. Faumuina, 21, was detained at a Leppington residence. He faces charges of conspiracy to murder, participating in a criminal group, and firearm offenses. Documents indicate he was slated as the shooter, though he was absent from the initial chase.
Co-accused include Chris Faigafa, 26, charged with conspiracy to murder and directing a criminal group; Osman Sabsabi, 21, accused of surveilling the target. Both remain in custody. A 17-year-old accomplice received strict conditional bail, with a court appearance next month. His lawyer noted limited evidence tied to events the day prior.
Faumuina was denied bail and returns to court on June 24. Authorities link group members to an October vehicle firebombing in Riverstone; a 20-year-old faces charges there but not in the murder plot. Two BMW fugitives remain at large.
Target’s Background and Ongoing Threats
Ayman Tamer, previously convicted of supplying commercial methamphetamine quantities, received police warnings about persistent threats. Det Supt Box stated: “He’s thankful. We’re maintaining dialogue with him and he’s aware of the threats.”
The motive and commissioner behind the plot stay undisclosed, with investigations continuing and more arrests anticipated. Box noted: “It’s expected in some shape or form that they will be targeted.”
