In central Newfoundland, the town of Badger has broadened its evacuation orders as water levels in the Exploits River surge, prompting dozens of households to leave their homes on Thursday. While some residents have already departed, others remain on high alert, preparing for potential further instructions amid the escalating flood threat.
Affected Areas Under Evacuation Order
The provincial government announced the expanded orders late Thursday, targeting specific neighborhoods vulnerable to the rising waters. All properties along the following streets must be vacated: Beothuk Street, Earle Street, Kinsman Drive, Main Street, Park Street, River Road, and Sheppard Street.
Additionally, even-numbered addresses on the north side of Badger Drive are included in the mandate. On Maple Street, civic numbers from 34 to 76 and from 33 to 99 are also required to evacuate.
Registration and Support for Evacuees
Residents displaced by the orders are directed to register at the Badger Community Centre located at 19 Maple Street. This step ensures access to necessary assistance and updates during the crisis.
Provincial Emergency Response
The Department of Justice and Public Safety reports that the province’s emergency operations centre is operating at Level 2, with full engagement from emergency partners to manage the situation. Ongoing monitoring of the river has revealed that water has begun overflowing its banks and encroaching on nearby streets, heightening the risk of severe flooding not seen in decades.
Local officials emphasize the importance of vigilance, noting that conditions can shift rapidly. The town has been tracking ice buildup and water rise for over a week, with 24-hour surveillance in place. For the latest developments, check the Community of Badger’s Facebook page.
