A cellphone video captures a 16-year-old learner driver from Abbotsford, B.C., and two friends speeding along Highway 1 at Popkum on July 21, 2025. The BMW sedan, owned by the driver’s stepmother, hit 180 km/h in a 100 km/h zone before the teen ignored a police stop and accelerated, culminating in a collision with a parked dump truck.
Dramatic Moments in the Footage
The footage highlights the rapid shift from thrill to terror. Cpl. Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol noted, “Nobody likes getting stopped by police, but this video shows the alternative is usually much worse.” He added, “You can see how quickly the teen’s friends went from enjoying the ride to ‘don’t kill us.’”
Post-crash audio reveals the driver shouting, “Run!” while a passenger responds, “Run where?”
Legal Penalties and Vehicle Consequences
The Class 7 learner now faces a 12-month licence suspension. A court found the driver guilty of multiple offenses, including:
- Excessive speed: $483 fine
- Driving without due care: $368 fine
- Driving contrary to restrictions (too many passengers): $109 fine
- Driving contrary to restrictions (no supervisor): $109 fine
- Driving without an “L” sign: $109 fine
- Failing to obey a stop sign: $167 fine
- Passing on the right side: $109 fine
- Improperly equipped vehicle: $109 fine
Fines may adjust at sentencing. The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days, with the stepmother liable for towing fees, impound costs, and any repairs or deductibles.
Call for Parental Awareness
Cpl. McLaughlin urged, “We hope this video stimulates parents to talk with their children about how badly this could have ended. We all need to do more to prevent tragic outcomes.” The incident underscores the dangers of reckless driving among young motorists.
