A Shadow Over a Classic: Co-star’s Final Act on Iconic Bond Film
The production of the 1963 James Bond film, From Russia with Love, was overshadowed by the tragic decision of one of its prominent actors. Pedro Armendáriz, who portrayed Ali Kerim Bey, the head of MI6’s Istanbul station, took his own life shortly before the film’s completion. Armendáriz, a celebrated Mexican actor known for his substantial role alongside Sean Connery, had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Despite his declining health, Armendáriz was reportedly determined to fulfill his commitments to the film, aiming to secure financial stability for his family. To accommodate his condition, the film’s shooting schedule in Istanbul was condensed, and his scenes were prioritized. As his health deteriorated, the production team made further adjustments, utilizing a stunt double and even director Terence Young standing in for him during the final two months of filming.
A Difficult Decision and Lasting Impact
With only weeks left to live and unable to continue working, Armendáriz checked into a hospital near his residence. It was there, on June 18, 1963, at the age of 51, that he tragically died by suicide, having smuggled a firearm into the facility.
His passing necessitated uncredited script revisions by Berkely Mather during the remaining filming. The movie’s editor, Peter Hunt, worked diligently to keep the production on track for its premiere, despite schedule delays and budget overruns. Following a suggestion from director Terence Young, Hunt restructured the opening sequences of the film. This change led to a now-iconic tradition in the James Bond franchise: the Red Grant training sequence was moved to precede the opening credits.
A Family Legacy in Film
The legacy of Pedro Armendáriz continued through his son, Pedro Armendáriz Jr. The younger Armendáriz also carved out a successful acting career, notably playing President Hector Lopez in the 1989 Bond film Licence to Kill. He went on to star in major Hollywood productions such as Amistad, The Mask of Zorro, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Tragically, he too was diagnosed with cancer, passing away in December 2011 at the age of 71. Both father and son are interred at Panteón Jardín in Mexico City.
From Russia with Love is scheduled to be broadcast on ITV1 this Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm.
